- Date posted
- Description
- In the fall of 1965, the recording of "Rubber Soul" was a scintillating race against the clock in order to release by December, with those sessions yielding some of pop music's most sublime songs. "Rubber Soul" highlighted their evolution as songwriters, plus the influences of marijuana use and favored artists including Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, Motown, and more. Ultimately, the album would mark a big departure from their earlier hits. "Rubber Soul" foreshadowed the bold experimentalism that would define their later work, notably 1966? s "Revolver." In this episode, Scott will focus on the writing and recording of many of the album's classic songs, including "Michelle," "In My Life," and "Drive My Car," as well as the first double A-side single, "We Can Work It Out"/"Day Tripper."

- While the craze known as "Beatlemania" had taken over the UK, in the fall of 1963, the Beatles were practically unknown in America. Through the efforts of band manager Brian Epstein, TV host Ed Sullivan, and a teenage fan from Silver Spring, MD, all of that would change by February 1964. By the time The Beatles arrived at JFK Airport on February 7, 1964, "Beatlemania" was a full-blown phenomenon in America. Their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show garnered 73 million viewers, making it one of the most watched shows in television history.

- Fifty years after the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the constitutionality of busing children to achieve racial integration in schools, The Tower Road Bus revives the unresolved stories of African-American students and educators thrust into all-white schools during the 1970s. Against the backdrop of violent anti-busing protests across the nation, Dotson Burns, Jr, a child of the Jim Crow South, lands on the frontlines of school integration, first as a teacher and then as the first Black principal of a majority-white school in Prince George's County, Maryland. Mindful of the eyes of white parents and the suspicions of Black students and families, he must oversee the busing of frustrated Black students from the historically-Black community of Tower Road to the mostly white Crestview Elementary School.
