- What do the World Series, access to water and microwaves have in common? Turns out, a lot. Did you know that when a stadium opens for the first time, it tests the toilets in what’s called the “big flush”? And bathroom plumbing is just one way that baseball stadiums use a lot of water. The San Francisco Giants estimate they go through about 2 million gallons of water a month. That may seem like a lot, but they used to use way more than that before the 7-year California drought prompted them to re-examine their water use. Those are just some of the things NBCLX journalist Fernando Hurtado learned on his scavenger hunt to connect the dots between these three random subjects.

- In the weeks and months following 9/11, Arab and Muslim men across the country found themselves swept up in investigations into the terror attacks, often simply for minor immigration violations. Rachel Meeropol of the Center for Constitutional Rights explained to NBCLX storyteller Clark Fouraker how 9/11 helped create “a two-tiered system of justice in this country” that exists to this day.
Editor’s Update: A day after this story was published, US District Judge Dora Irizarry dismissed all remaining claims in the case filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights. The ruling determined that individuals who were detained in federal prisons could not sue the warden or others who participated in alleged abuse of inmates. Parties to the suit have not decided if they will appeal the ruling.

Mutual aid, which is when a group of people collectively pool their resources to help those who need it, comes from a long tradition that includes immigrant groups in the U.S. in the early 20th century.
One of the next generation of these groups is Bed-Stuy Strong, which was formed in response to COVID-19 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
