The Bridge Ministries in Bryan and First United Methodist Church of College Station are two of nine food pantries in Brazos County working to put an end to hunger. They both serve just over 1,000 families a month, relying entirely on donations from the community.
In Texas, 13% of households—1 in 8 Texans—experience food insecurity. Here in Brazos County, that number is slightly higher at just over 14%. Agencies like The Bridge Ministries partner with the Brazos Valley Food Bank to meet the need. - Illegal burn prompts permit reminder within city limits, dangers of open burns
- Date posted
- Description
- Firefighters are reminding residents of the dangers of burning within city limits after multiple calls for a controlled burn kept fire engines busy over the weekend.
On Friday, a controlled burn in a field near Boonville Road and University Drive sent smoke into the air, triggering a response from the fire department. This is where crews discovered an open burn happening without a permit.
“We had to go out and respond to that fire many times just to check on it. Kept putting more water on it to make sure that it was put out. And so again that took up a fire truck many times within that day,” Chris Lamb with the Bryan Fire Department said.
Even without a countywide burn ban, openly burning within city limits is illegal without approval. Residents can apply for permits to open burn, which helps the fire department know how many resources to send to calls and also comes with some rules.

- Mass shooting suspect unfit for trial in Brazos County
- Date posted
- Description
- Larry Bollin, the Iola man accused of committing a mass shooting at Kent Moore Cabinets in Bryan back in 2021, was back in a Brazos County courtroom Monday. He faces charges including murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted capital murder of multiple persons.
Bollin had a status hearing Monday and was scheduled for a jury trial next week. However, Tuesday afternoon, KBTX learned he’d been deemed temporarily unfit for trial after examination by multiple psychologists.
Bollin first underwent a mental health evaluation last year, and the case has slowly worked its way back and forth through the court system. Attorneys on both sides agreed to an order of incompetency in Brazos County on Monday.
Experts close to the investigation believe Bollin can be restored to competency for a trial eventually.

- College Station city leaders are continuing their push to bring a convention center to Aggieland. They met Monday ahead of their normal date to accommodate the Thanksgiving holiday. During Monday’s meeting, they received a presentation from Brian Piscacek, the City of College Station Economic and Tourism Manager, regarding the scope of the potential project and gave their feedback on the things they consider important for the community.
Monday’s meeting is one of many the council has had over the last few months. The council initiated discussions about bringing a convention center to Aggieland in the early ‘90s. Despite initial plans and voter approval, setbacks occurred. Tonight, city staff will present a timeline, highlighting events like the City Council’s adoption of Public/Private Partnership guidelines in March and an August presentation on the feasibility of a convention or recreation center. During that August meeting, staff compared facility sizes, constru...
