The first step was the fallout after the Times published wrote an op-ed written by Sen. Tom Cotton (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/03/opinion/tom-cotton-protests-military.html) arguing that then President Donald Trump should call in the National Guard to quell the Black Lives Matter riots. Although a popular opinion at the time, employees at the New York Times were outraged that such an opinion could be printed. What resulted was the firing of several employees and the New York Times throwing its opinion staff under the bus. Hear more in the clip.
The second step was when in May 2021 during violent riots in Israel in which Palestinians attacked Jewish homes and businesses, the Times referred to them as '"clashes".
