In this Gleaner Minute for August 27, 2025, police in St Ann say charges are expected to be laid against the father of one-year-old Ameir Saunders after the bodies of Ameir and three-year-old Shamair Henry were found in Swamp District, Moneague. Acting Senior Superintendent Rohan Elliot says evidence points to the father, who remains in hospital, as the main suspect in the children’s deaths.
On the election front, PNP debater Julian Robinson says his party would begin implementing the $3.5 million income tax threshold in April 2026, funded by economic growth and government restructuring. He estimates it will cost $55 billion. However, the JLP’s Fayval Williams dismissed the plan as the “biggest political scam in Jamaica’s history,” insisting it cannot be achieved without new taxes. Williams reiterated that the JLP’s plan to cut the income tax rate to 15 percent will cost between $25 and $30 billion and will be implemented responsibly.

Paul Buchanan has once again stepped into the political ring, hoping to create the biggest upset in this general election by wresting St Andrew West Central from Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Dr Andrew Holness.
The People’s National Party (PNP) standard-bearer, who pulled off a surprise victory in St Andrew West Rural in 2011, has embarked on a political daredevil act in a seat Holness has held for nearly three decades.
“It’s a tough ask,” Buchanan concedes, even as he insists that he can topple the JLP leader.
If he achieves the feat, Buchanan would become the second person to beat the leader of either the PNP or JLP in the country’s history. Norman Manley was defeated by the JLP’s Edward Fagan in St Andrew Eastern.

When Dr Gabrielle Henry was crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2025 earlier this month, she described the moment as nothing short of surreal. It was the culmination of months of training, discipline, and determination, and as she stood on stage, she felt the weight of that hard work finally paying off. What made the victory even more meaningful was the fact that this was not her first attempt. Having returned to the competition, Henry’s triumph carried with it a deeper sense of fulfilment.
Not only did Henry take the top title, but she also swept four sectional awards: Best Swimwear, Media Challenge Award, Best Personality, and the Altruism Award.
In an article published in The Gleaner shortly after her win, Henry described it as a full-circle moment. She first entered the competition in 2023.
