- Overhaul inquiries to make them more efficient and effective, says House of Lords committee in new report.
Public inquiries are set up to consider incidents of major public concern, such as the Grenfell Tower fire, the Post Office Horizon scandal and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Statutory Inquiries Committee has been considering the way these inquiries work. In its new report it found inefficiencies leading to delays and unnecessary costs. It calls on the government to conduct a major overhaul, including supporting an independent body responsible for following up on recommendations and ensuring that those accepted by the government are implemented.

- Improving the support and guidance offered to victims of crime and major incidents was on the agenda this week as members continued further check and change of the Victims and Prisoners Bill. During report stage, the government accepted Lords proposals to require the compensation scheme for victims of the infected blood scandal to be established within three months of the bill becoming law.
Members also voted to agree changes on:
🟥 requiring a duty of candour for those operating across all public services during major incidents
🟥 ensuring that the personal data of a victim of crime is not used for immigration control purposes without their consent.

- The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill returned to the Lords this week for members consideration of House of Commons changes to the bill. The process of a bill going back and forth between both Houses as the Lords and Commons try to resolve disagreements on the final text is known as “ping pong”.
This week, the Lords voted to reinstate clauses removed from the bill by MPs on:
🟥 exemptions for agents, allies and employees of the UK Overseas
🟥 deeming Rwanda as a safe country.
The bill now returns to the House of Commons for further consideration of Lords changes.
Also this week, support for victims of homicide abroad was on the Lords agenda as members began further consideration of the Victims and Prisoners Bill.
