The Lords Sport and Recreation Committee has set out the need for a new national plan for sport, health and wellbeing in its report published on 10 December 2021.
In the report, the committee highlights the risks of not acting. Particularly the need to tackle levels of inactivity in certain groups, such as women and girls, disabled people, ethnic minorities, the elderly and people from less affluent backgrounds. A national plan for sport, health and wellbeing will set clear goals and better coordinate departments to deliver real change.
The report also makes recommendations on school sport, safeguarding and calls for the appointment of a new minister for sport, health and wellbeing.

- Two House of Lords reports have highlighted a growing trend by government, made worse by Brexit and COVID-19, to give sweeping powers to ministers to make regulations, which create new laws without proper scrutiny by Parliament.
The committees highlight a lack of effective scrutiny of secondary legislation which, unlike Acts of Parliament, is not subject to several stages of robust checking.
The reports by the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee and Delegated Powers Committee have called on the government to ‘stop ruling by diktat and restore power to Parliament’ today, calling for effective scrutiny of laws that affect us all.

- The Lords Public Services Committee has called on the government to act urgently to support children who are growing up with reduced life chances.
In a new report, published on the day of the @BBCCiN annual campaign, the committee expressed concerns about the increase in the number of vulnerable children who are invisible to services in England during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The committee has also warned that this crisis is disproportionately affecting children from the most deprived areas, who are at risk of significant harm without early intervention. Yet spending by local authorities on intervention projects has been cut by £1.7 billion over the last decade.

- Members of the Lords will discuss the main principles and purpose of the Assisted Dying Bill during second reading, on Friday 22 October.
This is a private member's bill, a type of public bill introduced by an individual member of the House (rather than the government). Public bills affect everyone. Private members' bills must go through the same set of procedures as other public bills.
Baroness Meacher (Crossbench), chair of Dignity in Dying and the bill's sponsor in the Lords, will open the debate.
Over 140 members are expected to take part, representing a wide range of professions and diverse personal experiences.
