- HOUSTON – The U.S. Secret Service, working with local law enforcement partners, prevented an estimated $14.5 million in losses to Houston-area consumers this week as part of a two-day outreach operation targeting illegal payment card skimming and Electronic Benefit Transfer fraud.
Law enforcement personnel visited 372 area businesses in Harris County during the operation conducted May 13-14. A total of 3,175 point-of-sale terminals, gas pumps and ATMs were inspected during the operation.
Teams also distributed educational materials about credit card skimming to help businesses identify illegal skimming devices in their point-of-sale terminals, gas pumps and ATMs.

- A hunter is facing 74 charges after game wardens say he illegally killed at least 13 white-tailed bucks across three Texas counties over 11 months.
Darrell Maguire, 55, of New Braunfels, faces numerous wildlife and drug offenses stemming from an investigation into poaching incidents in Comal, Hays and Bexar counties between the fall of 2024 and late summer 2025.
Authorities allege Maguire often used a crossbow to shoot the deer from his vehicle, decapitated the animals to take their heads, and left the rest of the carcasses to waste.
The investigation was launched in June 2025 following the discovery of several buck carcasses in Comal and Hays counties. Game wardens recovered crossbow bolts from front yards and porches in residential neighborhoods where several of the shootings took place. Investigators believe Maguire illegally killed at least eight bucks in these residential areas from June through September 2025.

- Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for an official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
China expert and political analyst Gordon Chang told The National News Desk he expects Putin to use the visit to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine and energy ties with China.
“I think that Putin certainly wants to talk about his failing effort in Ukraine,” Chang said. He added that “China can't be too pleased about it because it's been backing Putin,” and said the leaders are also likely to discuss “Russian energy sales to China,” noting China “right now needs a lot of energy, needs a lot of oil and gas.”
Asked whether the visit could increase tensions between the United States and China, Chang said it should. “Well, it should, because we know that China has been backing this effort in Ukraine. And that is attacks on the West,” he said. “So, yes, the United States should be very upset.”

That means the Oklahoma City Thunder have to get a little smarter.
It took historic efforts — namely a 41-point, 24-rebound game from Wembanyama and a 24-point, seven-steal gem from rookie Dylan Harper — for the Spurs to grab the double-overtime thriller that was Game 1 on Monday. Game 2 is Wednesday, and it's the Thunder who have to answer.
