A very strong El Niño continues to develop in the Pacific Ocean, with forecast models indicating further strengthening as we head into winter. We'll examine the unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures driving this pattern and take a closer look at NOAA's seasonal temperature and precipitation outlooks.
The strongest forecast signal for our area is a wetter-than-normal winter. A more active storm track could bring frequent Gulf weather systems, multiple rounds of soaking rainfall, and occasional flash flooding or severe weather.
In this edition of NEXT Weather, we explain what the latest winter outlook means for southwest Alabama, northwest Florida, and the surrounding Gulf Coast.

- A strong cold front is moving through the Gulf Coast, bringing a noticeable change in temperatures, much drier air, and gusty north winds. After highs in the middle to upper 80s on Friday, temperatures will drop into the upper 60s to lower 70s this weekend, with overnight lows falling into the 40s inland and lower 50s closer to the coast.
Behind the front, north winds will increase Friday night into Saturday, with sustained winds around 15-25 mph and gusts potentially reaching 35–40 mph. A Wind Advisory is in effect from Friday night through Saturday evening for portions of southwest Alabama, southeast Mississippi, and the western Florida Panhandle. These winds could bring down additional trees and branches, especially in areas where trees were weakened by Hurricane Isaias, potentially causing more power outages and road closures.
The cooler air will also be much drier, with afternoon relative humidity values dropping to around 25-30% in some areas Saturday....
