Earlier that day, hotel employee Theo Bahe and bystanders acted on pure instinct to pull another person from the rushing drainage ditch. Hours later, Williams Singavarapu was swept away in the same location and was later found deceased near Northern Arizona University. Police also believe a second unidentified person died in the floodwaters.
Flagstaff residents traveling on Interstate 17 encountered severe flash flooding, describing highway conditions as resembling a river filled with floating logs, dirt, and debris. Longtime residents noted they had never seen flooding of this magnitude in 22 years of living in the area. Local authorities carried out six swift water rescues alongside dozens of evacuations across Coconino County, including Oak Creek near Sedona.

Rising floodwaters completely submerged the facility by Sunday evening to trigger a second spill, and water quality testing will occur once levels recede.
Highway 89A north of Sedona remains closed after floodwaters damaged the corridor, with ADOT noting it will take several days to evaluate whether the roadway can safely reopen. Major impacts also hit Camp Verde, where waters peaked early Monday morning and residents along the Verde River, West Clear Creek, and Wet Beaver Creek remain under evacuation orders alongside communities on White Mountain Apache tribal land. According to the CDC, the rapid outbreak has already led to more than 16,000 hospitalizations and 900 deaths, including at least three children. Dr. Anna Durbin of Johns Hopkins University noted, "This is the highest early season hospital rate for mid October since the 2010-2011 flu season." San Diego mother Catherine Hershey said, "I know it's been going around the school. Making the kids wash their hands as soon as they get home. I'm just cleaning all day when I have time."
Doctors say two main factors are driving the fast flu spread: nationwide vaccine hesitancy and flu variants emerging earlier than expected. Dr. Andrew Pekosz of Johns Hopkins University explained, "This year the early cases seem to be driven by a variant of the H1N1 influenza virus.... and those mutations allow it to escape from some immunity in the population." ...

- 1980s elections: Senator Barry Goldwater launched a campaign for a possible fifth term in the U.S. Senate from the steps of the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott, Arizona, returning to the same location where his Senate bids first began 28 years ago. Goldwater addressed supporters gathered from across the state, criticizing President Carter while calling for conservatism, strong national defense, and victories for Ronald Reagan and fellow Republican candidates.
Meanwhile, election officials across Maricopa County are finalizing extensive logistics for upcoming voting, preparing over 300 precincts, 1,200 voting machines, and ballot supplies to handle a complex ballot with 61 separate decisions. County election leaders are encouraging voters to review sample ballots ahead of time to prevent long lines, though officials note they do not plan to aggressively enforce a state law that allows for the removal of voters who spend more than five minutes in a booth.

Officials in Flagstaff confirmed at least six water rescues and reported one person missing after being swept away by swift currents.
Rising waterways led to emergency evacuations along the Verde River, West Clear Creek, and Beaver Creek in Camp Verde, with temporary shelters activated for displaced residents.
