- VA History in Focus: National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic
- Date posted
- Description
- In 1982, recreational therapist Santo "Sandy" Trombetta from the Grand Junction VA Medical Center introduced adaptive skiing to a wheelchair-bound Veteran at Colorado’s Powderhorn Resort. What began as a daring experiment quickly spread, and by 1986, nearly 100 Veterans were hitting the slopes, leading to the creation of the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. The inaugural event in 1987 brought together nearly 90 Veterans from 27 states and proved the power of sports in recovery, earning the nickname “Miracles on a Mountainside.” With Disabled American Veterans joining as co-presenter in 1991 and the move to Snowmass in 2001, the clinic has grown into a premier adaptive sports event. Each year, it continues to showcase resilience, community, and the triumph of the human spirit.

- Description
- In August 1945, the United States ended World War II by detonating atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which led to the Veterans Administration using nuclear technology for medical research beginning in 1947 under Dr. George M. Lyon. By the 1950s, VA hospitals were increasingly utilizing radioisotopes for medical research and treatment, culminating in the creation of a Nuclear Medicine Service in 1966 to coordinate clinical applications. In the early 1960s, the Omaha VA hospital emerged as one of the centers of radioisotope research and diagnosis thanks to the nuclear reactor buried in its basement. Dr. Rosalyn Yalow's pioneering work at the Bronx VA hospital earned her the Nobel Prize in 1977, cementing VA’s role as a leader in nuclear medicine.
