- EPHRATA — Exactly what information the Grant County PUD needs from its customers was the subject of discussion at the regular commission meeting Tuesday.
The commissioners will vote on a new customer privacy policy at the Sept. 27 meeting, and reviewed the proposed policy Tuesday. Commissioner Bob Bernd expressed concern at the utility’s practice of asking customers for a Social Security number. He asked why they were needed in the first place. Customer account supervisor Annette Lovitt said it’s part of the PUD’s credit check procedure for new customers. Some utilities don’t use them, but Grant County PUD officials are confident that the security system protects the information, Lovitt added.

- OTHELLO — Othello School District officials approved the budget for 2016-17 at a special meeting this week.
The budget includes a $48,552,376 general fund. The general fund pays for most school operation, including salaries, supplies and school operation. The capital projects fund, which pays for construction, was budgeted at $3,440,000. The debt service fund pays back bonds issued for previous construction projects and was budgeted at $2,352,782. The Associated Student Body fund was budgeted at $457,100, and the transportation vehicle fund, which pays for new buses, was $275,000.
The board also approved a new, two-year master agreement with the Othello Education Association (the union representing teachers) and a new agreement with the Public School Employees, the union representing classified staff.

- MOSES LAKE — Outside hitter Rebecca Hall approached the line judge, hands on head, desperate for an explanation.
The call stood, Eastmont into the net, and the marathon third game would continued tied 30-30.
An otherwise by the numbers volleyball match was transformed into a pendulum of emotional highs and lows as the Wildcats and Chiefs traded game-points in the decisive third. Moses Lake, down 2-0, had an opportunity to extend the match to a fourth game twice, but was thwarted on both occasions. Eastmont eventually strung two points together to take the match 25-19, 25-16, 32-30.
“I wish we would’ve played with that intensity starting out,” senior co-captain Alexa Cox said. “We didn’t play to our ability, especially in the first and second set, and so I’m proud of our team how we pushed through the last set. But the first two I wish we would’ve pushed ourselves a little harder.”

- Big Bend was able to snap an 11-match losing streak Monday against Centralia.
The Vikings fell behind two games to none before winning the next three 18-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13.
Brittany Hosley, the lone sophomore and captain on this year's team, keyed a 4-0 run the helped Big Bend rally from a 9-4 deficit in the fifth and deciding game.
Sierra Schutte's kill was blocked out of bounds for the match's final point.
Big Bend hosts North Idaho Friday at 6 p.m.

And although the progress Moses Lake made against Ferris didn’t translate to the win column, it was evident on the field.
Ferris defeated Moses Lake 4-0 last year in Spokane. At Lions Field on Saturday, the Chiefs were able to hang with the Saxons for much of the game in a 1-0 loss.

- MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake freshman Carlie Gregg battled a talented field to finish ninth overall with a time of 22 minutes, 31.5 seconds to lead the girls cross country team to a third-place showing Saturday at Blue Heron Park.
The field included some of the best distance programs from eastern Washington and the Chiefs handled themselves well at the Moses Lake Invitational. Gregg broke the top 10 in the 83-runner varsity girls field. Senior Anette Vyak Hk finished in the top 20 with a time of 23:00.9 to place 16th. Mikayla Cooper, another Chief freshman, kept the Moses Lake grouping fairly close, finishing 23rd in 23:20.4. Kiera McPartland (24:06.6) and Camille Sanislo (24:54.9) were 28th and 37th, respectively, to round out the scoring five.

- QUINCY — The name is a little daunting: Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day kind of brings to mind a disease telethon or a public service announcement. But it’s Quincy’s big celebration, and they wouldn’t change it for something snappier.
Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day started in 1981, when a local farmer heard somebody say on the radio that farming should be done away with because it was easy enough to get food at the supermarket. Out of his frustration grew a Quincy tradition.

“Fifteen years ago today, the reality of terror attacks reached out and touched our nation,” said Moses Lake Fire Chief Brett Bastian. “For all of us, the events will live in our memories.”

- In just her second high school game, Escamilla scored five goals to help Warden rout Quincy 9-1. Escamilla scored two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game, adding three more consecutively in the second half.
“Aaliyah’s very hungry for the goal,” Warden head coach Hannah Mohs said. “She has a huge desire to score any chance she can get and she is aware of where the goal is no matter where she’s at on the field, if I have her at midfield or forward. She’s very smart about where she’s playing off of other players. She’s good positionally — she leaves space for herself and she has a good right and left foot.”

- “I would say we had 200 cars come through in the first hour,” said Horizon Credit Union branch manager Kacy Campos, who was outside directing traffic. “We certainly didn’t expect this kind of response. I’m getting a workout.”
They came in trucks. They came in cars. Paul Templeton from Moses Lake even rode up on a motor scooter in front of the DeVries Business Services truck dumping load after load into a massive shredder. By the end of the three-hour session, the Moses Lake branch processed 18,600 pounds of paper. The Ephrata branch had a total of 5,000 pounds go through the shredder at their event.

- MOSES LAKE — Class speaker Shaquille Upshur said he enrolled at Columbia Basin Job Corps to get training in construction trades – and that was it. But while he was just there for the job training, he got a lot more, he said.
Upshur was one of 12 students graduating with Job Corps certifications Thursday, which was National Job Corps Commencement Day.
Shaquille earned two certifications, in cement work and plastering. And when he got to Job Corps his intention was to “get it (the training) done and leave.” He discovered he was getting more out of it as he went along, he said, but he didn’t realize how much until he went home to see his mom, who was ill.

Face painter Yemilet Santoyo studied her canvas intently, which just happened to be the right cheek of Kaitlyn Garcia. The 9-year-old Peninsula Elementary second-grader went to work diligently etching the design. Her nose wrinkled with her attention to detail, this was no ordinary work of art. MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College will launch an “unmanned aerial vehicle” program this fall, and received a grant to help pay for equipment.
Unmanned aerial vehicles also are called drones.
The five-year, $2.2 million federal grant will allow the college to buy fixed-wing aircraft and one additional rotorcraft, said program director Pat Ford. The college will receive $550,000 per year.
