- Housing in the United States was already in crisis mode long before covid-19. But when the pandemic hit, it only got worse. CNN's Elle Reeve talks to activists, tenants and landlords who are pushing to make changes to the housing system during a national health emergency.
Today, there are 500,000 people who are homeless in America, but millions more are housing insecure — meaning they spend a large portion of their income on their rent or mortgage, or they are living in overcrowded spaces or poor conditions. Even before the pandemic, one in four US renters spent more than half their income on rent in 2018, according to a Harvard study.

When she launched the female-focused dating app in 2014, which requires women searching for heterosexual matches to make the first move, some were skeptical it would take off. But Wolfe Herd's vision — that the app actually would empower women to make their own choices, rather than burden them with it — caught on. Bumble has become a household name and has grown to include services beyond dating, including professional networking and finding new friends.
Then she made a strategic decision to push Bumble into India, a risky move given that casual dating is a relatively new and urban phenomenon and that India has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world. Still, Wolfe Herd didn't shy away.

"When you grow up as a tech person — and I spent my career in semiconductors — there aren't that many large US semiconductor companies. So I was really excited to become CEO," Su told CNN Business. She liked that she could walk around a Best Buy and pick up a laptop, knowing that the microchip or processor her company built was powering it.
Not everyone would have been so enthusiastic. When Su took the helm of AMD in 2014, its stock was heading toward an all-time low.
But Su, now one of the most powerful women in tech, likes a challenge. She says that's why she became an engineer in the first place. She had to make bold bets — some of which wouldn't begin pay off for five years — to turn AMD around.

- Why McDonald's switched to fresh beef | Risk Takers
- Runtime

- Description
- If you've eaten a McDonald's Quarter Pounder recently, you may have noticed that it tastes better than it used to.
That's because in spring 2018, McDonald's swapped out frozen beef for fresh beef in most of its quarter-pound burgers in the United States — and the improved product has been a hit. Sales of the burger have soared since the change. In the first three months of 2019, McDonald's sold 40 million more quarter-pound burgers in the United States than it did in the same period the year before, when it was still mostly using frozen beef. McDonald's reported in June 2019 that the change also helped its burgers gain US market share in what the industry calls the "informal eating out" category for the first time in five years.
It may seem like a simple, obvious decision: Fresh beef gets hotter faster and tastes juicier, delivering a more appetizing burger. Through consumer insights, McDonald's knew that their customers would respond well to the upgrade. ...

- Description
- Rob Ross lost $1 million when a hacker tricked his cell phone provider into an illegal SIM swap.
A SIM hack is an attack that occurs when hackers take over a victim's phone number by transferring it to a SIM card they control. Ross told CNN Business that by taking over his cellphone number, a hacker was able to gain access to his email address and ultimately his life-savings.
In recent years, cybersecurity breaches have become so common that some consumers may almost take for granted their information has been compromised at some point. The list of massive data breaches includes a major hotel chain, a credit reporting firm, a bank and a social network. But SIM hacks are both less talked about and yet potentially more devastating.

- As coronavirus spreads, Uber and Lyft drivers are faced with a hard decision: stay at home or work. CNN’s Jon Sarlin looks into the unique challenges facing the workers of the gig share economy amidst a pandemic.
Many gig companies have said in recent days that they will compensate workers diagnosed with coronavirus or placed under quarantine by public health authorities. Putting aside the fact a diagnosis may be difficult to prove given availability and criteria for a test, many workers can't afford to stop working, yet fear contracting the virus.

- Description
- Hoan Ton-That's app, Clearview AI, has sparked a national debate about the ethics of facial recognition software. In this half hour interview with CNN Business’ Donie O’Sullivan, Ton-That talks legality, privacy, and bias in the era of facial recognition.
This interview with Hoan Ton-That was shot on February 5, 2020.
Clearview AI’s app uses a database of billions of images that the company scraped off the Internet without user consent. Hoan Ton-That defends this. He claims he has a First Amendment right to use publicly available images. Tech companies, though, don’t agree. Twitter, Google, and other tech giants have sent cease and desist letters to Clearview AI. Apple has even banned the app from its App Store. Lawmakers, too, have concerns about Clearview AI. Ton-That tells CNN Business, he believes regulation is needed.
Still, in the face of controversy, Hoan Ton-That says he’s happy to be the face defending the use of facial recogni...

- The 'retail apocalypse,' explained
- Runtime
- 4:30
- Date posted
- Description
- Everyone has heard the headlines: the retail apocalypse is here; online shopping has replaced traditional stores. But it turns out that's not what's actually going on.
In 2019, the US saw roughly 9,300 retail stores close; a 61% uptick from the previous year according to Coresight Research. Concerning? Yes. But if you look a little closer, you get a bit of a different picture. For instance, Payless, the discount shoe retailer, accounted for nearly a quarter of those store closures. In fact, out of the 12 companies that each closed more than 200 stores, 9 had filed for bankruptcy in recent years.
The narrative has been that, as e-commerce rises, traditional brick-and-mortar stores decline. Is that really the case? Not quite. In fact, research shows that the two can have a symbiotic relationship. That’s thanks to a shift in consumer behavior. Shopping today doesn’t always happen all online or all in-store; it’s often a hybrid experience, such as buying a p...

- Runtime

- Description
- Andrew Walz calls himself a "proven business leader" and a "passionate advocate for students." Walz, a Republican from Rhode Island, is running for Congress with the tagline, "Let's make change in Washington together," or so his Twitter account claimed. Earlier this month, Walz's account received a coveted blue checkmark from Twitter as part of the company's broader push to verify the authenticity of many Senate, House and gubernatorial candidates currently running for office. Twitter has framed this effort as key to helping Americans find reliable information about politicians in the leadup to the 2020 election.
But there's just one problem: Walz does not exist. The candidate is the creation of a 17-year-old high school student from upstate New York. The student, who CNN Business spoke to with the permission of his parents and has agreed not to name, said he was "bored" over the holidays and created the fake account to test Twitter's election integrity efforts.

- Description
- Armed with satellite imagery, Descartes Labs' AI-driven platform can detect budding wildfires before they spiral out of control.
With land parched from drought and temperatures on the rise, wildfires have become larger and deadlier. The notorious Camp Fire, for example, spread at a rate of 80 football fields per minute. Based in Sante Fe, New Mexico, Descartes Labs uses artificial intelligence to scan real-time satellite imagery for heat anomalies. From the moment an image is captured in space, it takes about 9 minutes for Descartes Labs' system to spot a fire and alert authorities according to the company.
The technology has the potential to make wildfire response times faster, which could mean containing fires before they become a much bigger problem.
