- CNBC's Phil Han explains why there is so much controversy surrounding the Keystone XL pipeline.
Subscribe to CNBC International: http://bit.ly/1eiWsDq
So what exactly is the Keystone pipeline? TransCanada corporation wants to build a 2,678 Kilometer extension of the keystone pipeline called Keystone XL.
It would carry 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from the Alberta oil Sands in Canada to Steele City Nebraska that would then connect to an existing stretch of pipeline down to refineries along the East Coast.
So why is there so much controversy? Environmentalists say the Keystone pipeline will add to global warming. And that Keystone means the US government isn't taking climate change seriously.
Extracting oil from the tar sands also requires an enormous amount of energy. Those in favour argue that it will make the US more energy independent, add tens of thousands of new jobs, and billions of dollars to the economy.
