- Description
- In 2026, China installs a new industrial robot every two minutes. America installs a fraction of that. The race is not over, but can the U.S. keep up?
In this episode of NYC Innovates, we take a deep dive into Standard Bots, a New York-based startup and currently the biggest American maker of industrial robot arms, is building something the robotics industry has never really attempted: a robot so intuitive that a factory worker with zero technical background can pick it up, program it, and deploy it in a single day.
Backed by Amazon, Samsung, and General Catalyst, and operating inside a vertically integrated production facility that takes raw bars of metal in one end and ships finished robots out the other, Standard Bots is making the case that American manufacturing does not have to lose this race.
The question is whether the US moves fast enough to win it.

- Description
- Running underwater, also known as aqua jogging, replicates the exact motion of running while removing nearly all joint impact. The water provides 12 to 14 percent more resistance than air, which means your muscles are working harder on every single stride, burning up to 40% more calories than a comparable land run, with zero pounding on your knees, ankles, or hips.
Studies show that runners who switch to aqua jogging exclusively for up to six weeks maintain their 5K times, their VO2 max, and their lactate threshold with almost no measurable drop in performance. It strengthens the areas runners neglect most, which are hip flexors, shoulders, core, and lower back, simply because water pushes back from every direction at once. Cardiologists recommend it to patients because the heart actually pumps more blood per beat in deep water than it does on land.

- Description
- Space doesn’t just challenge the mind, it quietly reshapes the body. In the absence of gravity, muscles begin to shrink, bones lose density, and even the heart works less. To counter this, astronauts follow a strict daily training routine designed to keep them strong and functional while in orbit.
Because the body deteriorates quickly in space, astronauts dedicate about two hours each day to exercise. Beyond space missions, the technology behind these machines is influencing how we approach rehabilitation and aging on Earth, showing that the solutions designed for orbit can have lasting impact far beyond it.

- A pair of gloves promised to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing worlds, but they came with a few critical flaws…🧤😕
The SignAloud gloves were invented by two University of Washington sophomores, Navid Azodi and Thomas Pryor, winning a $10,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize in 2016. Each glove uses sensors to track hand positions and movements, sending data via Bluetooth to a computer that speaks the corresponding word or phrase through a speaker. The appeal was portability — unlike earlier devices requiring full-arm or body sensors, these were compact enough to wear like an everyday accessory.
While the invention was breakthrough, the Deaf community raised serious concerns almost immediately, arguing the gloves missed key parts of ASL grammar by ignoring facial expressions and body language, which are just as important as hand movements in sign language. Critics also noted that the burden of adaptation fell entirely on Deaf users, who had to wear...
