"This large-scale operation will be carried out in close cooperation with Iran, Oman, all other coastal states in the region, the United States and the maritime industry," the statement added.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is China's only freshwater cetacean still surviving in the wild, after the baiji, or Yangtze river dolphin, was declared functionally extinct in 2006. China's decades-long efforts to protect the species, including a 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River, have shown encouraging results. Recent surveys have recorded a resurgence in the wild population after decades of decline.

- After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Rewi Alley remained committed to promoting friendship between China and New Zealand. In 1952, he helped establish the New Zealand China Friendship Society and encouraged more New Zealanders to visit China and witness the country's development firsthand. Through people-to-people contacts, he continued introducing China to New Zealand and the wider international community.
