As part of the process that led to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, tens of thousands of survivors shared their stories. Their testimony was deeply personal, often painful and was meant to be confidential. This comprehensive archive of abuse is scheduled to be destroyed in 2027.
Connie Walker is an award winning Cree journalist and professor at Toronto Metropolitan University. She won a Pulitzer Prize and Peabody Award for her podcast focused on her father's experiences and systemic abuse at St. Michael's Indian Residential School in Duck Lake, Sask. Her next project hopes to inform survivors about the impending destruction of records and give them the opportunity to have them preserved.
