- Description
- Marvin Reese has been elected for a second term as Mayor of Bristol after winning the race for the position at the weekend.
After two rounds of counting he beat Green Candidate Sandy Hore-Ruthven by 13,613 votes.
Mr Rees retained his position of city mayor for Labour as did London Mayor Sadiq Khan, but the party performed poorly elsewhere following Thursday's elections, losing the Hartlepool parliamentary by-election and many council seats.
Mr Rees cautioned against a snap reading from the rise in Green votes in Bristol since 2016, pointing out that last time round many people voted for Independent George Ferguson - who was not standing this time.

- Many of us can't wait for pubs to reopen on Monday, but there are also lots of us who don't like having to pre-book places before we visit.
Whether it's because you don't like having to fill out forms or because you're someone whose plans change as frequently as Bristol's tiers changed in December, sometimes it's nice to be able to rock up without having to make a reservation.
Thankfully there are plenty of great pubs across Bristol that will be operating on a first come, first-served basis and not taking bookings when they reopen from April 12, allowing us to leave our decisions to the last minute.
Remember however that many of the boozers below are likely to be very busy with so many people keen to enjoy their first post-lockdown pints, so it's worth arriving early and being prepared to wait for a table, especially at peak times.
Also bear in mind that pubs - and restaurants - will have many of the same coronavirus rules and safety ...

- Protesters took to Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore's office to voice their anger at The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill.
Around 50 ACORN Bristol members paid a visit to Conservative MP Chris Skidmore’s office in Hanham to "let our feelings be heard about his support for ‘the bill’."
In a post on Facebook, the ACORN Bristol group said: "The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill seriously threatens our right to protest, our free speech and our ability to win better lives.
"Skidmore has spoken out in favour of the bill, saying "The police are a cornerstone of our law and democracy,” and voted for its second reading.
The bill threatens to criminalise being ‘annoying’ so we decided to annoy Chris Skidmore by posting some statements through his letterbox, about what protest has won us.
"We also redecorated his office with paper chains made of the bill, to symbolise the countless victories working class people have won by coming together.

Last year's spectacle was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, although there was an early morning 'Fiesta Flypast' to enjoy, as well as a live-streamed Virtual Nightglow.
However, fans will be delighted to hear there are plans this year to stage an event "as closely aligned to the Fiesta and its values as possible," say organisers in a statement.
They say they are working on a "variety of options for the event," which is due to take place between August 12-15, depending on the success of the roadmap to exit lockdown.
"As restrictions ease in the UK, it was good to see a number of test events taking place over the bank holiday weekend as part of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, putting smiles on thousands of faces," reads the statement.
"This is something that we hope to be able to achieve in August.

- There has been a public outcry after Weston-super-Mare was voted among the worst seaside towns in the UK.
It was the second-least popular location on the list by Which? consumer watchdog, prompting locals to clash on social media, citing the pros and cons of the coastal resort.
Over 4,000 people were surveyed about their recent trips to seaside towns and resorts and ratings were based on beaches, attractions, value for money, peace and quiet, and scenery.
While Bamburgh, Northumberland bagged the top spot, Somerset’s most famous resort missed the mark and Skegness in Lincolnshire came bottom of the table.
Weston-super-Mare scored an average customer rating of just 55 per cent, with one-star ratings for scenery and value for money.
Visitor ratings for beaches, attractions and peace and quiet were two stars, and the average hotel price was listed as £72 per night.

Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary made the grim discovery after responding to reports of a suspicious car in the Coleford area on the evening of May 12.
The man in the car was spoken to as officers had checked the registration details and determined it was registered to a house in Wolverhampton.
Gordon, 28, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 and a half years today (4 May) after stabbing Phoenix four times at a Birmingham refuge where they both lived on April 16 last year.
A hearing at Bristol Crown Court was told that the university graduate told Gordon she wanted to move back to London before the knife attack.
