- Frontiers 26: Governors and Gaslines
- Runtime
- 28:24
- Date posted
- Description
- Almost immediately after the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was built, governors began talking about building a natural gas line. It seemed like it was the natural next step. But no one envisioned the challenges along the way – that oil producers would need the gas to maintain pressure in the oil fields to produce the oil, which has much more value — or, that the market for gas in the Lower 48 would dry up, due to fracking technology, which made supplies of gas and oil plentiful and Alaska gas no longer necessary.
So we set our sights on the market in Asia and came up with a new plan. Instead of shipping our gas across Canada to the Lower 48, we would send it down a pipeline to Cook Inlet, liquify it and ship it out on tankers across the Pacific.
Although prices in Asia have dropped — enough to make us wonder whether our latest plan pencils out — we still dream about a gas project and its potential to bring the state about $2 billion in annual revenue, as well ...

- Description
- This week on Frontiers, we have a colorful and lively program, as we look ahead to the state’s largest convention, which draws thousands of people from across the state.
This year’s Alaska Federation of Natives Convention (AFN) is expected to set new records for attendance.
There is nothing like it in America. Almost 50 years ago, AFN got its start in the fight for Native lands. Over the years, it continues to evolve.
Each year, delegates focus on different social, political and economic issues. This year’s theme is “Heroes in our Homeland,” showcasing ordinary people who do extraordinary things in their communities.

- Runtime

- Description
- This program is about fishing, but it’s also about determination – an exploration of one of the most challenging economic frontiers in Alaska.
Years ago, king salmon were the icon of the Yukon, as well as the “money” fish.
There was a time when runs were strong enough to support both commercial and subsistence harvests. But in recent years, the kings have been off limits to even subsistence fisheries, as the state struggled to meet its treaty obligations with Canada, to allow enough kings to reach their spawning grounds across the border.
As it became clear kings were no longer a commercially viable fish, Kwik’Pak, the fisheries plant in Emmonak, began to focus on chum salmon, which run at the same time as the kings.

- Frontiers 15: Seldovia, the Town Time Forgot
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- This week on Frontiers, the spotlight is on Seldovia, a tiny town about 45 minutes from Homer.
Years ago, Seldovia was the hub of the Cook Inlet fishing industry. But after the 1964 earthquake, the town had to reinvent itself.
It’s been a slow process that continues today as the town works hard to promote tourism and charter fishing.
Seldovia has all the challenges of an off-the-road-system community, but also some of the blessings of being in a location where there’s no such thing as a bad view.
With its almost non-existent crime rate and slow pace of life, Seldovia has been called the “town time forgot.” But those who live there also are hoping that the community’s time has finally come for a strong, stable economy.

- Runtime

- Description
- The military has had a huge footprint on Alaska’s frontier story — and this week on Frontiers, we will retrace those steps. We’ll also look at whether the U.S. Army’s recent decision to cut almost 3,000 troops in Alaska can and should be reversed.
Some of this week’s highlights:
Sen. Dan Sullivan joins us from Washington, D.C., and explains why he thinks the Department of Defense cutbacks of Alaska troops are a “huge strategic blunder,” due to a growing military threat from Russia.
Retired Army Col. George Vakalis, who most recently served as city manager under Mayor Dan Sullivan, talks about what the military considers when it downsizes, as well as the importance of Alaska’s geographic location and cold weather training.

- As Anchorage celebrates its 100th birthday, a new mayor takes the reins — Ethan Berkowitz, whose motto might be, “If first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
After a 10-year stint in the State Legislature, Berkowitz has been a perennial candidate for statewide office.
He’s run for governor, lieutenant governor and Congress, which has made him a familiar face in state politics — always as a Democrat challenging the Republican status quo.
His opponents have painted him as liberal. His supporters, including political researcher Ivan Moore, say he’s more of a moderate.

- Veteran Mount Marathon runner Clint McCool sums up the July 4 race in Seward as a “dance with the mountain.”
This week on Frontiers, McCool and last year’s champion of the women’s race, Holly Brooks, describe the kind of choreography it takes to cross the finish line first.
They say there are one hundred ways to get up and down the mountain in a given year. The challenge for the runner is to choose the fastest route, and it’s usually experience on the mountain that trumps speed.
But will that be the case this year? — with elite international competitors like Kilian Jornet and Emilie Forsberg.

- If you’re a history buff, you’ll love this week’s Frontiers.
As Anchorage celebrates its 100th birthday, we travel back in time.
Although the city is relatively young, much of its history would come as a surprise to many who call Anchorage home.
KTVA’s veteran reporter Lauren Maxwell takes us to a neighborhood near Fairview, which was Anchorage’s first subdivision. Although it later came to be known as Pilot’s Row — because a lot of aviators lived there — they weren’t the ones who built the subdivision, originally known as Block 13.

- Description
- This week on Frontiers, we take you to Nome for the 32nd annual Rural Providers’ Conference, a grassroots Native sobriety movement that moves to a new community every two years. This is RPC’s first time in Nome.
Many attend year after year. Some come to rededicate themselves to their sobriety. Others work in the treatment field and look for inspiration in the stories of recovery, shared at the gathering.
Conference organizers hope that by moving the location of the gathering, it will give people in different regions access to information about how to fight addiction, since treatment programs in Alaska are far and few between. The gathering also emphasizes traditional Native ways of healing, tools a community can incorporate in working with families.

- Whether you catch it or eat it, fishing is something almost every Alaskan can relate to.
Despite that, the commercial fishing industry is not well understood by the average Alaskan.
Laine Welch, of Alaska Fish Radio, has worked for almost three decades to change this. Frontiers host Rhonda McBride takes you behind the scenes of Welch’s homegrown media empire in Kodiak — it’s a chance to find out why she’s earned the nickname “Ms. Fish,” as well as a chance to learn more about the personal side of a woman who had some early struggles before launching her career in fisheries reporting.

Currently the fate of House Bill 44, the Alaska Safe Children’s act, hangs in the balance.
The measure recently underwent a substantial rewrite in Sen. Mike Dunleavy’s Senate Education Committee, much to the anger of HB 44 supporters, who say Dunleavy’s changes have effectively killed the bill.

We take an in-depth look at the lives of two men who pushed into new frontiers in two very different arenas — Charlie “Etok” Edwardsen, a champion in the Native land claims fight — and Dan Cuddy, the Anchorage banking patriarch, who helped a growing, struggling state build a modern economy.

- Veteran KTVA journalist Lauren Maxwell and photographer Emily Landeen take us to the Western Alaska community of Shageluk to experience the thrill of wood bison being released into the wild. The bison disappeared from the region more than a hundred years ago.
Our guests this week on Frontiers are biologists from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game – Tom Seaton, the bison project manager, and Cathie Harms, a regional program manager. They talk about the twists and turns of project that’s been decades in the making.
We also turn from bison to bears gone rogue. Frontiers host Rhonda McBride does a post mortem on the bear family that recently wore out their welcome in the Anchorage neighborhood of Government Hill and had to be moved to the Kenai Peninsula.

- Description
- Last fall when Byron Mallott gave up his run as governor on the Democratic ticket and teamed up with Bill Walker, a Republican, it appeared to be a marriage of convenience.
But since Walker was sworn in as governor — and Mallott as lieutenant governor on Dec. 1, 2014 — the relationship between the two has grown and seems to be stronger than ever.
On this week’s Frontiers, Rhonda McBride explores that relationship, as well as Mallott’s personal story – a look at his long history of promoting civil rights for Alaska Natives.
As a Native leader, Mallott’s election has brought more attention to the job than usual. Most lieutenant governors are less visible and sometimes even sidelined by their bosses. But Mallott is carving out a role unlike any Alaska has seen before, and appears to be emerging as the Walker administration’s “philosopher in chief,” wielding considerable influence.

- As we look at various renewable energy systems across the state, we hope this week’s Frontiers program speaks to the inner geek in everyone. It’s always exciting to see new technology applied in creative ways. When it comes to meeting Alaska’s energy needs, there are no cookie-cutter approaches.
One of the highlights of this week’s show is a look at a power system, designed to supply both heat and electricity to the individual home. A prototype, about the size of a handcart, debuted last month at the Chena Hot Springs Resort near Fairbanks.
