- Description
- ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar delivered a counter-address to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Independence Day speech, arguing that three years of the President's "treatment" has left Nigerians struggling to afford food, medicine and transport, and ending with "Tinubu must go."
Concurrently, President Tinubu's directive for reduced transport fares from October 1 under the CNG Transit Programme has yet to deliver widespread relief, though Oyo, Enugu and Borno recorded reductions.
The Presidential CNG Initiative's Vice Chairman, Toyin Subair insists fares are going down.
Meanwhile, NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi said Nigeria is not cursed but has cursed itself through its choices, and pledged not to spend a single holiday abroad if elected.
In Akwa Ibom State, police arrested eight members of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement over an Independence Day march in Uyo, with Obi's media aide alleging tear gas was fired, which the Po...

- Tinubu's Speech Must Be Tested Against Independence Day Promises — Kila
- Runtime
- 14:05
- Date posted
- Description
- The speech was eloquent, well-written, and full of optimism. However, we should neither accept it merely for its optimism nor reject it simply because we are in opposition. It is a speech that must be tested against what the President said on Independence Day. He has set a clear benchmark for his own administration. The President now agrees with some of us that growth cannot be measured by GDP figures or IMF reports alone. He has shifted from justification to accountability.

- Lagos Governance Has Benefited Those In Charge, Not The People — Rhodes-Vivour
- Runtime

- Description
- Usually, people believe politicians are the same because the same people have run Lagos for a long period of time. We have come with two different ideologies. The first seeks to extract from the state and maximise money, where currently, those who benefit are only those in charge. The other puts the people first, with affordable housing, good roads and quality education. My plan for the youth is to increase their capacity and provide opportunities for them to develop skills to a world-class standard.

- Lagos Children Must Be In School Or Learning A Trade — Hamzat
- Runtime

- Description
- The first step is to establish a Child Welfare Administration Agency. Children should not be roaming the streets; they should either be in school or learning a trade. With open borders allowing people to enter the state, we may not be able to stop everyone from coming in, but we can regulate how they live. Child welfare will come first, followed by a state wealth fund. The state’s resources will be managed to ensure the next generation does not suffer.

- I’m not another politician here to talk about the “leaders of tomorrow.” I think it’s an unfortunate phrase because you are the Lagos of today. Gen Zs and millennials make up about 50% of the population, so why is Lagos so inhospitable to young people? We have a failing education sector and inaccessible housing. My vision is for the government to play its part in the social contract with citizens.

- On Nigeria's 66th Independence Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation, acknowledging that millions of Nigerians are still struggling for their next meal, school fee and medical bill, while casting a vision of an economy that lifts people out of poverty and builds businesses, farms and unicorns that compete globally. He took a swipe at his predecessors, declaring that past leaders chose the morphine of subsidies while his administration chose to excise the cancer, and noted that four years cannot undo what generations built, but can change the country's course.
Concurrently, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio also released independence statements. The First Lady described Nigeria's diversity as one of its greatest assets, to be nurtured through peace and dialogue, while Akpabio urged Nigerians to sustain the values of unity and patriotism.

- Indian captain Smit Machchhar remains in hospital in Saudi Arabia after being stabbed during a violent confrontation in the cockpit. Israeli officials say his co-pilot then apparently tried to crash the aircraft - sending it plunging nearly 14,000 feet in just 30 seconds.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to release the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene before a reserve flight crew took control and landed safely in Saudi Arabia.
All 174 passengers survived - and while authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE investigate exactly what happened and why, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now among those praising the wounded captain as a hero.
