- Description
- Many American foods are laden with chemical additives, some of which are banned in the European Union, as well as, Japan, Canada, and Australia. The Food and Drug Administration’s GRAS policy, which stands for Generally Recognized As Safe, is one of the main reasons why. The policy allows companies to self-declare the safety of newer, less-tested chemicals without agency oversight.
Consumer groups have long expressed their frustrations about how the food supply is regulated in the U.S. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to tackle this issue as the new Health and Human Services Secretary.
The FDA is currently experiencing department cuts and changes in leadership under President Donald Trump's administration. An FDA official told the AJC that the agency plans to work with the new HHS leadership to safeguard the food supply through pre-market and post-market safety evaluations of chemicals.

The layoffs come as President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claim they are targeting waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government.

- The new fifty-cent surcharge on eggs at Waffle House is part of a larger trend across America. A unique combination of inflation and bird flu has sent egg prices soaring to record highs, disrupting the supply chain. Since 2022, more than 145 million birds have been slaughtered in an effort to stop the spread of bird flu. Wholesale egg prices have risen to record highs, averaging around $8.00 a dozen, or four times their 2019 cost, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Kennedy, Jr., President Trump’s pick for Health and Human Services Secretary, has moved forward in the confirmation process in the U.S. Senate, with many of his views sparking debate in Congress and across the country. One of those issues? Fluoride in water, which the CDC named as one of the 10 great public health interventions of the 20th century because of the decline in cavities. Fluoridated water has come under scrutiny, though, with a federal judge recently pointing to a study that associated higher levels of fluoride exposure with lower IQ in children, asking the EPA to further look into its risks. The level the study called out is higher than what the U.S. Public Health Service recommends, however. The EPA has appealed the decision. The conversations about fluoridated water continue around the country, with some communities choosing to stop fluoridating. Supporters see it as a path to public safety, while critics warn of risks to due process, family separation, and excessive costs, with an estimated $27 billion price tag in its first year. The act raises questions about its impact on the immigration system and feasibility.
According to the bill, state governments can sue over alleged failures of any immigration-related decision from the federal government that causes harm. This includes suing over: releasing an undocumented immigrant from custody, failure to faithfully inspect individuals seeking admission into the United States, and...
