- Cartel Paradise: Investigating the Pacific's Drug Superhighway | Part 1 | Foreign Correspondent
- Date posted
- Description
- Fiji is ground zero in the Pacific’s drug crisis. Breathtaking quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine are being trafficked through Fiji and on to Australia, placing enormous pressure on authorities as they try to police more than a million square kilometres of ocean. It’s also fuelling a wave of addiction and corruption as the drugs are now flooding into the Fijian community.
Foreign Correspondent has been given access to highly secure intelligence and naval facilities to see how they are trying to combat the smugglers. Through exclusive interviews with key insiders, senior reporter Stephanie March and ABC Fiji reporter Lice Movono lift the lid on how Fiji’s most audacious meth plot came undone.
This is part one of a major two-part investigation looking at the drug crisis in the islands of the Pacific – a crisis which is turning paradise into a pit stop on a drug smuggling superhighway and ensnaring our neighbours in a sinister web of transnati...

- Iran's grip on Strait of Hormuz 'not part of our planning' Israel ambassador says | Insiders
- Date posted

- Description
- Israel's ambassador to Australia concedes his country did not expect Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz when it decided to go to war.
Hillel Newman said Israel planned for all scenarios but did not assume Iran would choke off global energy supplies.
The closure of the strait has caused a surge in global oil prices, putting pressure on US President Donald Trump, who announced a ceasefire earlier in the week.
Speaking on the ABC's Insiders: On Background Podcast, the ambassador admitted Israel was surprised by the scope of Iran's response, not the fact that it responded.

- Why Russia may be the biggest winner from the Iran war | 7.30
- Date posted
- Description
- As the world grapples with the impact of what's being described as the biggest ever shock to world energy markets, one winner has emerged from the mayhem: Russia's Vladimir Putin.
"The war in Iran is pretty good business for President Putin," Alexander Kolyandr from the Centre for European Policy Analysis told 7.30.
"Russia is probably the main, if not the only winner of the war against Iran."
For more than three years Russia's oil exports have faced sanctions which placed a price cap on how much Moscow could charge for oil.
The sanctions, enforced by the G7, the EU and Australia, are aimed at limiting Moscow's earnings to fund its war in Ukraine.
But last month, with oil prices skyrocketing due to the Iran war and the near closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the US changed course.
It temporarily waived sanctions on Russian oil that had already been loaded onto tankers for export. Norman Hermant reports.

The deal was announced as the clock ticked down to Donald Trump's deadline to “wipe out a whole civilisation” in Iran.

Jacob Greber looks at the economic fallout from the war, and David Speers also interviews former US energy secretary Ernest Moniz, who was the lead negotiator of the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran.
