Councilmember Wanika Fisher has introduced legislation establishing requirements for where and how data centers could be built. The proposal could create a path to lift the moratorium by setting minimum acreage and requiring setbacks from residential communities.
Fisher said the county should consider the potential economic benefits as it confronts budget challenges. County Executive Aisha Braveboy and former Council Chair Ed Burroughs have also pointed to possible revenue from the industry.
Council Chair Krystal Oriadha opposes lifting the moratorium, citing unanswered questions about infrastructure, the environment and potential long-term health effects. Residents who spoke before the council also urged lawmakers to keep new data centers out of the county.

- Montgomery County police are defending their decision to disband a specialized DUI enforcement unit as the department faces approximately 200 officer vacancies.
The Alcohol Initiatives Unit, which had operated for at least 25 years, was down to three officers, one corporal and one sergeant. Police said the positions will be reassigned to traffic safety, crisis response, emergency services and school coverage.
Assistant Chief David McBain said patrol officers already make most of the department’s DUI arrests. District officers accounted for 342 of the 437 DUI arrests made so far in 2026, while the specialized unit made 95.
The decision faces new scrutiny following a deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 270 that killed a mother and daughter. Police said the unit was still operating when that crash occurred.
MCPD says DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols and its summer and holiday alcohol task forces will continue.

- A Maryland mother is demanding tougher laws for repeat impaired drivers after her 26-year-old daughter was killed in a head-on crash.
Raphaela Weinsweig died April 18, more than a month after police say Jorge Moran Hernandez crossed the center line on Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg and struck her Jeep. Investigators said Hernandez was traveling more than 80 mph and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.28%—more than three times the legal limit. He also died in the crash.
Court and police records reviewed by the 7News I-Team show Hernandez had a lengthy history of impaired-driving offenses. After his seventh offense, he received a 10-year sentence with nine years suspended and was released after serving 91 days.
Hernandez was arrested again in January 2026 for what authorities described as his eighth impaired-driving offense. He failed to appear for a hearing and did not report the new case to his probation officer. A judge signed an arrest warr...
