- Every year in May, the Anchorage Waterways Council organizes the Creek Cleanup. Volunteers come together to remove trash from not only creeks, but all city waterways. Some wear waders and knee-high boots to trudge through creeks, others wear life-vests and canoe out into lakes. Bottles, sunglasses, plastic wrappers and straws fill up the bulk of the trash collection bags. Other items, like sleeping bags, a traffic cone, and a mangled vacuum cleaner are set off to the side. The group effort, started in 1984 under Mayor Tony Knowles, helps conserve Anchorage waterways and keep them habitable for the animals that live in them.
