- Just before 8:30 am on Friday, Nov. 30, a 7.0 earthquake struck Southcentral Alaska. Just seven miles north of Anchorage, it was the most significant earthquake to hit the area since the devastating Good Friday earthquake in 1964. Followed by hundreds of aftershocks, the earthquake cracked foundations, busted water pipes, and buckled roads. No deaths were reported, but Anchorage schools are closed for more than a week. Two schools in the region won’t be open for the rest of the school year.
