- What you need to know about a Pap Smear | Line One: Your Health Connection
- Date posted
- Description
- A pap smear is a test used to screen women for cervical cancer or other pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix. Often times Pap smears are performed as part of a woman’s annual exam. There are guidelines for how often a woman should have a Pap smear performed and these guidelines change occasionally. Changes may occur based on research and increased knowledge of one of the causes of cervical cancer, that being the Human Papillomavirus or HPV as well as the vaccines available to prevent HPV infection.
It is currently recommended that a woman have her first Pap smear at the age of 21. She would continue Pap smears every 3 years if normal until the age of 30. At 30 she would begin to also be tested for HPV and if negative, would continue this co-testing every 5 years. Of course, when abnormalities arise, either in the Pap smear itself or if the test is positive for HPV, this would necessitate further testing and change your screening frequency.

- Too icy to ski right now? Not for Junior Nordic.
- Date posted
- Description
- Most of Anchorage is currently covered in ice, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to ski. Junior Nordic athletes at Russian Jack Park found decent, if not ideal, skiing conditions on Wednesday.
Three times a week, at Russian Jack Park, Hillside and Kincaid, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage coaches take young skiers out to hone their skills. The skiers learn how to properly care for their equipment and dress for the weather, along with classic and skate skiing techniques. Coach Art Harmon leads the group Russian Jack Park and the nearly thirty kids who attend.
This week has brought challenging skiing conditions, but Harmon and the kids are determined to make the best of it.

- Description
- Alaska’s vast geography features dramatic precipitation variation from the relatively dry arctic to the rainforests of the southeast, but a changing climate is causing problems in some unexpected ways. This week on Alaska Insight, we’ll visit the Southeast community of Metlatakla to learn how residents in the community are working to adapt to a problem they never imagined -- drought.
Brian Brettschneider, a climate researcher with the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and KTOO reporter Elizabeth Jenkins join host Lori Townsend to discuss community health and water conservation in a rainforest.

- Date posted

- Description
- When you think of extremely dry conditions, California wildfires probably come to mind. But in 2018, some parts of Southeast Alaska were officially declared to be in drought. The region has gotten enough precipitation in the last few years to flood some parts of the country. But it’s not nearly enough to sustain a way of life -- dependent on rain. Reporter Elizabeth Jenkins brings us this story from Metlakatla, where a community is trying to adapt.
