- His furry face and big ears caught her eyes, and so did the fact that Charley the steer was set to be slaughtered. One Central Florida woman decided she couldn’t let that happen!
Central Florida resident and animal lover Leslie Russell saw a post about a young steer set to be slaughtered and decided she could not let it happen.
Charley, a 4-H steer who didn’t meet weight requirements, was set to be processed in mid-March. After seeing the post, Russell stepped in, launching a GoFundMe and ultimately paying for him herself to make sure he would be safe while donations continued. Organizers say they are still about $1,500 short of their goal.
That effort brought Charley to Bell Family Farm, where he arrived on April 7 with help from the Florida Farm School, which transported him for free.

At one such event recently at Icon Park in Orlando, nine people were arrested and two deputies were injured as 54 deputies responded to break up multiple fights.
Authorities are now preparing for another social media-organized takeover event planned for next month, according to a flier circulating online.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina confirmed that these events are organized by teenagers through social media, rather than by specific promoters.
Mina said authorities were aware of the potential for the Icon Park event because they monitor social media.

State senators are scheduled to convene on Tuesday at noon.
This special session, scheduled to run until Friday, May 1, comes as a judge in Virginia recently overturned a voter-approved change to that state’s House map, with appeals currently pending.
Governor Ron DeSantis has followed the lead of many Republican and Democratic states and proposed a new map that would give his party four more seats in Congress.
Democrats would be left with four seats.
Florida's constitution has a fair districting clause, approved by voters, that says boundaries cannot be drawn to favor one party or the other.

Attorney Ashley Ann Clement, who specializes in medical malpractice law, says there is no clear legal precedent in the state to guide the outcome.
“It’s unprecedented,” Clement explained. “There are not any appellate decisions that really provide any kind of guidance on this.”

Experts say the fires are not just advancing along the ground but are also throwing embers for miles, igniting new fires far from the main flames.
Florida Forest Service wildfire mitigation specialist Dr. Ludie Bond says the behavior she’s seeing right now is extreme.
“We have seen short-range spotting, long-range spotting, trees torching, firenadoes, fire whirls,” she said.
Bond says there is a common misconception about how brushfires destroy homes.
Many people assume flames have to reach a structure directly, but that is often not the case.

- Description
- It began like most other traffic stops in Central Florida: a radar screen lit up, a tone sounded and a trooper’s lights lit up the night sky in the early morning hours of January 17, 2026.
Trooper Tyler Novak said he saw a Lexus driving 122 miles per hour in the I-4 express lanes, where the speed limit is just 60 miles per hour, and pulled the car over.
Inside, he said in his report, was Travis Pittman, a Mt. Dora police officer.
The report does not detail what was said between Novak and Pittman: only that eventually, Novak asked Pittman to get out of his car to sign some forms, and allowed Pittman to drive off with a court date and a warning to drive safely.
