- On today’s edition of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey is joined in the studio by former Conservative MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, who has has his say on Labour cancelling mayoral elections for next year, in areas that Telegraph data analysis says Reform are favourites to win.
Jacob says the government “is frightened of the voters” and that the move is a “very sinister assault on democracy”.
In this episode, Sir Jacob and Camilla also reflect on the rumours of Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch agreeing a Reform-Conservative pact before the next election.
Despite both parties denying it, Jacob believes that it is their “duty to unite” in order to “stop a coalition of chaos” of Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and left-wing independents.

- Zia Yusuf, Reform’s former chairman and current head of policy, said the Government had made a “blatant attempt to stop big wins” for the Right-wing party by delaying the election of four new mayors. He is not wrong.
The reasons behind the decision on Thursday to delay the elections may well be technical, with Labour blaming ongoing local government reorganisation, but there is no denying the move is also highly convenient for Sir Keir Starmer’s party.

Security officials now fear these pupils could be used as human shields to deter a military intervention being threatened by the United States.
At the same time, aid is being slashed, and extremist groups and criminal gangs have disrupted food supplies, leaving 35 million people projected to face “severe food insecurity” next year.
This week, Arthur and Venetia speak to Chi Lael, Head of Communications for the World Food Programme in Nigeria to get a clearer picture of the crisis.

- Sir John Redwood, the former Conservative MP for Wokingham, treasury adviser to Margaret Thatcher and Welsh Secretary under John Major, has discovered a “borrowing bomb” in the Budget that no one has noticed.
Rachel Reeves reminded us at the despatch box last week that her choice was “not austerity; not reckless borrowing; but cutting the debt”, going on to say that “I said I would cut debt and borrowing, and I meant it”.
However, Sir John has discovered that, far from doing that, her plans will see an extra £1.3 trillion of borrowing and the total national debt rise to £3.53 trillion.
He joins Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley to explain how this Labour government’s “dreadful spending habit” will saddle the country with an eye-watering “debt mountain”.

Daniel arap Moi’s government paid up to £700,000 to John Ward, the father of Julie Ward, amid claims the son of the former president was involved in her death in September 1988.
The payment was arranged with help from a member of MI6 and styled as an “off-the-record” way to reimburse John for some of the expenses he incurred trying to find his daughter’s killers.
However the deal, which was made in 1997 and which have been revealed an investigative podcast by The Telegraph, is are likely to be seen as an effort to persuade John to give up on his quest for justice and put renewed focus on claims his daughter’s death was linked to Jonathan Moi, the president’s son.
Julie was 28 years old and worked at a publishing company based in Suffolk when she went on an overland trip through Africa. Her adventure ended abru...

- Donald Trump’s latest effort to end the war in Ukraine unleashed a week of diplomatic turmoil. And some of the most dramatic diplomatic twists and turns bear the finger prints of one man: Jonathan Powell, the British national security advisor, not only led a diplomatic rescue mission to recast Donald Trump’s original Russian-inspired proposals in Ukraine and Europe’s favour.
His influence can also be seen in Anglo-French plans for a “coalition of the willing,” and even earlier this year in Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan. He is a low-profile figure who wields real influence. So can the man who some have called Britain’s Henry Kissinger guide the war in Ukraine to a peaceful and palatable conclusion? Is his philosophy of engagement suited to grappling with Putin’s Kremlin? And have the week’s acrobatics brought Ukraine and Russia any closer to peace?

- Description
- At least 55 people have been killed in a fire that ripped through seven residential skyscrapers in Hong Kong.
More than 270 are still missing and feared dead after the flames tore through their homes on Wednesday afternoon, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate.
Officials are now investigating how the fire started at the Wang Fuk Court complex and how it was able to quickly envelop seven of the eight identical buildings in Tai Po, in the northern New Territories.
The 31-storey buildings, with 2,000 apartments, were undergoing renovations. Questions are being raised about the use of highly flammable bamboo scaffolding and green mesh netting.
One resident, Jason Kong, said he left his dog in the apartment and didn’t make it back in time to save him.
“I’m afraid the smoke will suffocate him,” he said tearfully.

- The rocket of right thinking is back for a crucial Budget Special as Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveils her second major fiscal statement. Her new £30 billion tax rise means a staggering £70 billion increase in just two years, the most "punitive tax raising budget in more than three decades".
Joining the co-pilots to dissect the numbers is the brilliant Telegraph columnist, Roger Bootle. Roger reveals why he thinks the budget will land "very badly with business" and discusses the "scandalous" leak of the Statement beforehand.
Co-Pilot Pearson calls it a "death knell budget for Labour" and argues that by funnelling huge amounts of money into the welfare bill, Reeves has confirmed it is now the party of the "Shirking class".
Whilst Co-Pilot Halligan identifies the "ghost" of the Employment Rights Bill looming over the budget, dubbed by some as the "Unemployment Rights Bill," warns that this "back to the seventies" extension of rights will be disast...

- Description
- The Budget has finally been delivered and it was every bit as horrible as feared. Rachel Reeves has gone on a £30bn tax raid, punishing savers and landlords, all so that she can afford to cut the two-child benefit cap in a desperate bid to shore up the support from her back benches.
Camilla and Tim react to the day’s events outside Parliament with Conservative shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride, who praises Kemi Badenoch’s evisceration of the Chancellor in the chamber and calls for her to go after breaking Labour’s manifesto pledge not to raise taxes.
Reform UK’s Danny Kruger also speaks to The Daily T, as does Labour backbencher Clive Lewis, who’s pledged to step down in his Norwich South seat so that Andy Burnham can challenge Keir Starmer for the leadership. Lewis says that he’s “not happy with the direction of travel” of his party and that Reeves’s fate is inextricably linked to Sir Keir Starmer’s.

- Description
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves holds press conference following her autumn Budget announcement in the House of Commons.
Rachel Reeves is to impose a higher rate of income tax on savers and landlords in an apparent breach of Labour’s manifesto.
The Chancellor is to tax income from savings and property at a new higher rate than income from wages.
Taxes will be applied at two percentage points above the rates currently paid by workers, meaning a basic rate taxpayer would pay 22p in the pound rather than 20p. A higher rate taxpayer would pay 42p instead of 40p. The measures are eventually expected to raise £2.1bn a year.
The Chancellor previously insisted she would not put up taxes on working people, while Labour pledged in its manifesto to “not increase National Insurance, the basic, higher, or additional rates of income tax, or VAT”.
