- Description
- Ali Larijani, Iran’s security chief, is believed to have been assassinated today by Israel in what would be a huge blow to the Iranian regime.
Roland Oliphant is joined by Akhtar Makoii to explain who Larijani was and why his death could be more significant for Tehran than Khamenei’s amid the ongoing US war.
Plus, Roland speaks to opposition figure Ali Safavi, part of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran. The NCRI is essentially Iran’s anti-monarchy opposition group and is led by the highly controversial People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) - previously designated as terrorists.
MEK supporter Safavi argues that an armed uprising rather than a war is needed to overthrow the Islamic Republic. He also discusses the MEK’s chequered history, the Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, and the enormous divisions among Iranian diaspora opposition groups.

- Rachel Reeves has used her ‘Mais Lecture’ speech at Bayes Business School to announce a ‘deeper relationship’ with the European Union, criticising Brexit for the damage it has done to the UK economy.
Camilla Tominey, Tim Stanley and Allister Heath question why the Government is choosing to pursue closer relations with a bloc whose growth is a fraction of the United States’, and ask whether it’s more of an idealogical choice than a pragmatic one.
Elsewhere, Camilla and Tim attend Reform’s latest press conference, which saw Nigel Farage launch a competition promising to pay the energy bills of the winner and their entire street for a year. Speaking to The Daily T, Farage also had his say on his party’s poll lead after YouGov were forced into changing how they show results following complaints from Reform.

- The troubling legacy of the pandemic on young Britons shows no sign of abating.
In 2020, school closures meant the uptake for the meningitis vaccine for 14-year-olds fell to 58.3 per cent, meaning four in 10 teenagers were unprotected.
Those teenagers are now at university, so it is perhaps unsurprising that in the past couple of years we have started to see an uptick in outbreaks and, sadly, deaths.

The Telegraph’s foreign correspondent Akhtar Makoii has obtained exclusive audio from an IRGC meeting that explains how Mojtaba Khamenei escaped the deadly US-Israeli strikes that killed his father, wife, sister, and other relatives on the first day of the Iran war. It also sheds new light on why he was chosen as Ali Khamenei’s successor.
Plus: how do you reopen the Strait of Hormuz and what can the UK really do to help Donald Trump? Jack Watling, senior research fellow for Land Warfare at the Royal United Services Institute, joins Roland Oliphant and Venetia Rainey to discuss the military options and why even they might not be enough.
They also talk about how China might be looking to take advantage of this conflict and the impact of the Iran war on Indo-Pacific security. Watling’s new book, Statecraft: The New Rules of ...

- Sir Keir Starmer has once again refused to be drawn into committing any kind of support for the conflict in the Middle East, after Donald Trump demanded more help from Nato allies and promised that “he will remember” the UK’s lack of action. In a press conference this morning, Sir Keir also refused to give any kind of commitment on whether fuel duty would rise in September, with the conflict already sending forecourt prices through the roof. After a weekend that saw damning extracts of a new book that paints Sir Keir as a Prime Minister in name only, with no fixed ideas, philosophy or political instinct whatsoever, Camilla and Tim ask – what is the point in his premiership?

Alan Dymock, Gavin Mairs and Charles Richardson reflect on Super Saturday which ended with France beating England with the final kick of the game to claim the title ahead of Ireland.
England saved their best performance until last but ultimately it was another defeat for Steve Borthwick's side, and it meant they finished with four defeats for the first time ever in Six Nations history. We look ahead to the summer and if Borthwick's future is still up in the air.
It was also a topsy turvy day for Ireland! They kickstarted Super Saturday by hammering Scotland only to miss out on the title thanks to Thomas Ramos' penalty, but overall it's been a positive campaign for Andy Farrell who faced questions heading into the competition.
We also discuss another mixed campaign for Scotland, the arrival of Italy as genuine c...

- Description
- Sir Keir Starmer is expected to face questions over his decision to defy Donald Trump on the war in Iran.
The Prime Minister will use a press conference at 10.30am to set out a support package worth £50m for households whose bills have been most affected by the energy crisis after the conflict choked off the world’s oil supplies and sent costs soaring.
However, Sir Keir is currently refusing to heed Mr Trump’s demand that the UK send warships to help to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route.
The Prime Minister’s refusal to join American and Israeli offensive action against Iran has plunged the UK-US special relationship into its worst crisis for many years.
Overnight, Mr Trump singled out the UK as he warned Nato allies that they faced a “very bad” future unless they agreed to his request for reinforcements.

From Tehran’s perspective, this war is going according to plan. The former Conservative leader and foreign secretary tells Camilla and Tim he was too young – at just 36 and with only eight years as an MP under his belt – to command the role. Hague also reveals how it felt going head to head with Tony Blair every week and opens up about the intrusion on his private life while in the public eye.
Plus, he says Keir Starmer’s “flatfooted” response to the Iran war has brought on a “rocky” period in the special relationship but admits he is “haunted” by Iraq – a military intervention he supported at the time.
