- April 2017 Climate Summary and May Outlook for Eastern Utah and Western Colorado
- Runtime
- 5:23
- Date posted
- Description
- April 2017 began cool and unsettled before quickly rebounding to a drying and warming trend for the second and third weeks of the month. This led to increased fire weather concerns and even a few new record high temperatures in western Colorado. April (like March) went out like a lion with an extended cool and wet period as a series of storms moved through. This led to the return of winter in the mountains with over a foot of new snow in some areas. This pattern also brought temperatures back down below seasonal norms with sub-freezing temperatures in many valley locations! The storms did bring much needed precipitation to most of the area. Still, several sites ended the month with below normal precipitation.
The outlook for May shows odds favoring generally warmer than normal conditions as well as above normal precipitation, especially near the Four Corners region.

- March 2017 Climate Summary
- Runtime
- 2:10
- Date posted
- Description
- March 2017 brought very warm weather to much of eastern Utah and western Colorado for the second and third weeks of the month. In fact, several record high temperatures were either set or tied at several sites from March 9th through the 19th. The benign weather came to an end the week of March 19th as a progressive weather pattern set up over the area with a series of storms moving into the region every few days. This brought temperatures back down closer to seasonal norms and gave many areas some much needed precipitation. Still, most sites ended the month with below normal precipitation.
The outlook for April shows odds favoring generally warmer than normal conditions with an equal chance for precipitation being either above, below, or near normal. In other words, no forecast tools favor the chance of any of these possibilities.

- Description
- February 2017 brought very warm weather to much of eastern Utah and western Colorado for the first three weeks of the month. In fact, several record high temperatures were recorded at several sites from February 8th through the 11th. The month was even on track to be the warmest on record in Grand Junction. However, a strong cold front arrived early on week four, sending temperatures plummeting. After the dust (actually snow) settled, Grand Junction ended the month as the 4th warmest on record for average temperatures.
Precipitation varied across the region with below normal precipitation recorded near Moab, UT near normal conditions around Grand Junction and slightly above normal over the mountains where snow continued to pile up.
The outlook for March shows odds favoring warmer than normal conditions with precipitation leaning toward drier conditions.

- January 2017 Climate Summary
- Runtime
- 2:13
- Date posted
- Description
- January was a progressive month for eastern Utah and western Colorado as a series of storms moved in every few days for much of the month. This, combined with the strong Atmospheric River event the first week of January, resulted in above normal precipitation for much of the area. Temperatures averaged 0.50 to 4.5 degrees above normal with precipitation amounts generally ranging from 0.30 to 1.30 inches above normal. This greatly improved the snowpack for both Utah and Colorado. As of January 31st, the Colorado snowpack ranged from being 130 to 170 percent above normal across the state while the snowpack in eastern Utah ranged from being 150 to almost 200% above normal!

- September 2016 Climate Summary

- Description
- With September now in the rear view mirror, it’s time for quick look back at what happened. The month saw our first freezing temperatures of the season across our high valleys. Record warmth fell in place on September 22, with 90 degree weather pushing as far north as the Grand Valley. Mountain snows accumulated to several inches as colder air interacted with very moist conditions thanks to the remnants of two tropical weather systems (Hurricane Payne and Tropical Storm Roslyn). And very wet conditions were observed over northeast Utah where Vernal reported over 4 inches of rain for the month, or about HALF of what they normally receive in one year (9.31”)!!!
Looking ahead to October, the Climate Prediction Center (@NWSCPC) is forecasting equal chances for above, below or normal temperatures and precipitation over all but the extreme northeast portions of Utah and northwest Colorado, where precipitation could jump to the wetter side of normal.
