- Description
- CNBC Marathon covers the changing athleisure market and how up-and-coming brands like On Running and Vuori are taking on industry names like Nike and Lululemon.
Nike is the world’s largest sportswear brand but the company is on a mission to regain its stride after a challenging year. A series of poor earnings reports over the past year eventually wiped out $28 billion from the company’s market cap and in June, the company experienced its worst trading day ever as a publicly traded company. Nike has blamed its performance on everything from macro challenges to remote employees, but analysts say it was part of a years-long series of strategic errors. During an effort to focus on direct-to-consumer sales through digital channels, analysts say the company has started to lack innovation and ceded market share to newer rivals like Hoka and On Running. Nike is now dealing with an excess of inventory from major sales slowdowns as consumers turn to newer styles from other brand...

- CNBC Marathon explores why young American adults today are struggling to settle down and make ends meet in the current economy.
Starter homes are typically modest in price and under 1,400 square feet. These units accounted for 40% of new residential construction in 1982 but just 9% in 2023. Economists say starter homes are disappearing as home builders contend with rising costs for land, labor and materials while navigating increasingly thick layers of regulation. As a result, many new homes are for high-end buyers in more remote locations. Meanwhile, the age of the first-time buyer rose to 38 from age 29 in 1981.
Gen Z and millennials are facing a financial paradox: Despite higher wages and a rise in net worth, many still live paycheck to paycheck. CNBC explores why traditional economic milestones like buying a home or starting a family feel out of reach and how instability, debt and housing costs are forcing young adults to rethink what "making it" really me...

- Canada has 79 banks in contrast to America’s nearly 4,500. But the U.S. banking industry is shrinking, with the number of FDIC-insured banks in the U.S. down by nearly half since 2005. Canada’s banking industry shows that concentration and simplified regulation can lead to a more stable financial system. Yet experts warn that consolidation in the U.S. could stifle innovation, reduce competition, hurt small businesses, create more banks that are too big to fail, and have negative consequences for the economy at large. Watch the video above to learn more about why America's banking industry is shrinking and what the U.S. can learn from Canada's more concentrated system.

- SpaceX has grown from a small startup founded by Elon Musk in 2002 to one of the world’s most valuable private firms. But this may have not been possible without numerous government contracts along the way, to the tune of $22 billion according to SpaceX. Over the years, the U.S. government has also become dependent on SpaceX for access to space. SpaceX’s Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket are the primary means by which NASA launches astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station. The company’s Starlink satellites have become indispensable for providing internet access to remote areas as well as to U.S. allies during wartime. The company’s Starship rocket, though still in testing, is also key to the U.S. plan to return to the moon. SpaceX is also building a network of spy satellites for the U.S. government called Starshield under a $1.8 billion contract. Even competitors including Amazon and OneWeb have launched their satellites on SpaceX rockets.
