- Supreme Court Says Trump’s Tariffs Are Illegal. Here’s What Happens Next

- Description
- The Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration lacked the authority to implement liberation day emergency tariffs. The ruling threw out the legal underpinning for many of the tariffs that Trump insists are essential for the U.S. economy and for rebuilding America’s shrinking manufacturing base. Trump’s reciprocal tariffs and his drug-trafficking-related duties both hinged on his administration’s expansive interpretation of IEEPA. But the court’s majority ruled Friday that IEEPA “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs.” CNBC’s Jeff Cox explain what lies ahead for U.S. businesses.

- Earning airline frequent flyer miles is getting harder and more expensive. United Airlines is the latest to be making big changes to its MileagePlus frequent flyer program. The airline will give more rewards to customers that have one of the carrier’s co-branded credit cards over those without one. The changes mark the biggest shakeup to the lucrative program in more than a decade. Airlines remade their frequent flyer programs a decade ago when airlines like Delta, United and American changed their frequent flyer programs to reward travelers with miles based on how much they spend on their tickets, not just how far they fly. That means cashing in on those points for a free flight costs more. CNBC's Leslie Josephs has the story.

Though the agreement is meant to open China’s market to Canadian canola oil, and to bring cheaper EVs to Canadian buyers, Canada also aims to open the door to joint ventures with Chinese companies. It's unclear whether they will invest if relations with US don't improve.

- If Congress doesn't pass the government funding bill by Friday at midnight, agencies that would close include the Department of Homeland Security, the Treasury Department, the Defense Department, the Transportation Department, the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Health and Human Services. ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies would largely be able to continue functioning under a government shutdown because Republicans last year gave them hundreds of billions of dollars for immigration enforcement, separate from the regular appropriations process.

- China’s next AI shock isn’t another DeepSeek-style model. It’s hardware.
After DeepSeek proved China could compete under constraints, that approach is moving from software to chips, power, and infrastructure. In this episode:
Why chip limits didn’t stop China—they shaped its strategy
How the DeepSeek playbook is moving from models to machines
The rise of China’s AI hardware challengers
Why energy, scale, and brute force matter more than chip specs
What this means for Nvidia, Washington, and the global AI race
