- How many people showed up to the pro-Palestine marches across Sydney Harbour Bridge?
- Date posted
- Description
- Even with reporters on the ground, it’s hard to figure out how many people attend a protest or a march. There's been a lot of conflicting numbers surrounding the recent demonstration across the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Jordyn Beazely was there reporting and wanted to figure out just how many people attended. She spoke to Dr Aldo Raineri, a senior Central Queensland University lecturer and expert in crowd safety management, and he estimated the figure to be significantly higher than what police suggested.
Guardian Australia shared drone footage with Raineri that showed the crowd just north of the bridge’s midway point, extending back to Wynyard station and Lang Park, where the march began.
He noted “these figures are really rough, given the variation in density”.

- Did you pay more tax than Adani on the Carmichael coal mine?
- Date posted

- Description
- More than three years after Adani started extracting coal from its Queensland mine, the Indian conglomerate has paid zero corporate tax from its Australian project and tax experts say it may “never pay a cent”.
Adani pledged just over a decade ago to plough $22bn in taxes and royalties into the Australian economy. Industry groups supporting the coal company had also claimed Adani’s controversial plans would fund schools, hospitals and other infrastructure for “almost a century”.
Adani’s most recent accounts for the Carmichael coal operations, for the year ended 31 March 2025, recorded $1.27bn in revenue. This gets dialled down to a $461.7m loss after various expenses, resulting in no tax payable.

The communications minister, Anika Wells, said on Wednesday the onus will be on platforms to design simple solutions, claiming there are “lots of ways” tech companies could check the ages of their users.
The government is still waiting on results from a trial of age assurance technology, but is pressing on with plans for the ban to come into force on 10 December.

As senior reporter Tory Shepherd explains, it’s due to a 'harmful algal bloom', or HAB, caused by Karenia mikimotoi. It’s not toxic to humans, but people are being told not to eat the sick or dead fish, and to keep their dogs away or on leashes. Some oyster and mussel producers have been closed as a precaution, while the tourism industry is suffering and beachgoers are horrified.
