Penny Wong, who moved the motion, said in an address:
'After what occurred yesterday, someone I’m close to this morning spoke about a conversation with her seven-year-old daughter last night and her daughter asked, "Mummy, do all Christians hate Muslims?" That summarised where we find ourselves and we see it again.'
It was at that point that Ralph Babet, the United Australia senator, was heard by this masthead and others in the Senate chamber to call out 'I do'.
Babet later told Guardian Australia he had said: 'I do, I hate radical Islam.'

- A beautiful rare pink grasshopper has been spotted in New Zealand
- Date posted

- Description
- An “exceptionally rare” pink grasshopper has been spotted basking in the sun alongside a river in New Zealand’s South Island.
A group of department of conservation researchers were conducting their annual grasshopper survey near Lake Tekapo in the MacKenzie basin when they came across the dark pink female critter.
The species – the robust grasshopper – is native to New Zealand, and the country’s largest lowland grasshopper. It is typically grey or brown, like the river stones of the only area they inhabit, the edges of the braided rivers of MacKenzie basin.
Jen Schori, a department of conservation ranger involved in the survey, couldn’t believe it when she came across the pink grasshoppers for the first time.
“It was so exciting. Pink grasshoppers are exceptionally rare.”

The use of stinger grenades by police has also led to legal action by protesters, including in the US, after they were used during Black Lives Matter rallies.

- Broken Trust: Kardell Lomas' story

She had 24 interactions with various agencies and she repeatedly disclosed fears for her safety, death threats, serious violence and other abuse.
A coroner’s finding detailed some of the events of those last few months. But it did not interrogate the actions of police in the lead-up to her death. It did not unpack what her family and First Nations experts believe is clear evidence of systemic racism in the way authorities and services responded to Kardell’s attempts to seek help.
The coroner declined to hold an inquest because “there does not appear to be any prospect of making recommendations that would reduce the likelihood of similar passings occurring in future”.

- House passes bill to release Epstein files
- Date posted
- Description
- The Senate has now moved swiftly to approve legislation that would force the release of investigative files related to Jeffrey Epstein, hours after a near-unanimous vote in the US House, nearly wrapping up a bipartisan effort Donald Trump had fought for months.
By unanimous consent, the Senate agreed to pass the measure as soon as it arrived in the chamber from the House, which had overwhelmingly approved the bill earlier on Tuesday in a 427-1 tally. Once the legislation is forwarded to the Senate, it will be automatically approved and cleared for Trump’s signature. The president, who dropped his opposition after it was clear it would pass, has said he would sign it.
“The American people have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, said in a floor speech on Tuesday, before winning unanimous consent. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”

- 'Exceptionally rare' pink grasshopper spotted by New Zealand ranger
- Date posted

- Description
- Researchers from New Zealand's conservation department conducting an annual grasshopper survey near Lake Tekapo on the South Island have spotted a rare pink grasshopper. The species – the robust grasshopper – is native to New Zealand and is the country’s largest lowland grasshopper. The pink hue is thought to be caused by a genetic mutation, as the insect is typically grey or brown like the river stones of its native habitat in the MacKenzie basin

Bill Karran was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter, rape and strangulation. A coroner found there was “very little … which would have prevented him” from killing Gail.
But Guardian Australia’s two-year investigation into domestic and family violence homicides in Queensland has uncovered shocking new evidence – including records withheld from the coroner – of serious police failures that placed Gail in danger the night she was attacked.

- CBA boss grilled over decision not to repay bank fees to vulnerable customers
- Date posted
- Description
- The chief executive of CBA, Matt Comyn, has mounted a fierce defence of the bank’s decision to not repay $270m in fees to 2.2 million low-income customers after a report by Asic in July. CBA has already paid $25m in 'goodwill payments' to tens of thousands of low-income Indigenous customers after the regulator in 2024 released a report which found banks were keeping vulnerable customers in high-fee accounts. But Comyn this morning doubled down on the bank’s hardline approach to Asic’s more recent report that accused the bank of charging hundreds of millions of dollars in excessive fees to millions of customers who were eligible for low-fee accounts.
The bank boss said there was 'nothing improper' about the fees charged to these customers, as they were charged in line with the published terms of conditions. He said the bank was a commercial entity and that at its extreme, returning those fees to its customers could be seen by the bank’s shareholders as 'an appropr...

Two months earlier, Baxter grabbed his middle child, Laianah, at an access visit and took her interstate. Police initially treated the matter as a custody dispute because no formal parenting orders were in place.
This body-worn camera footage released to Guardian Australia by the coroner shows two male police officers who served Baxter with the order telling him how to challenge it in court.

Former senior detective, Kate Pausina, believes the most startling revelation in the new evidence is that a number of police officers involved in investigating the killings had doubts about Clarke’s allegations that she had been a victim of domestic violence and coercive control – even after she was murdered.
A document prepared by detectives for a meeting with the state coroner on 10 March 2020 summarises early investigations and the proposed di...

Two whistleblowers from within the Queensland police and the state coroners court have spoken to Guardian Australia in the hope their revelations will change the way domestic violence cases and deaths are handled.
But it is not just one case. New evidence suggests that police failed at least two other women before their deaths, and failed them again after they died by not properly investigating those failures.
If something more could have been done to protect Hannah Clarke, then could something more have been done for the women whose names we don't know?

- What is happening in El Fasher and Sudan?

- At the end of October, the Rapid Support Forces captured El Fasher from the army.
It was yet another brutal development in Sudan’s war. Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab has said the level of violence was comparable to the first 24 hours of the Rwandan genocide. Since then, the RSF has been accused of killing hundreds of unarmed civilians in ethnically motivated attacks.
The RSF now controls all major urban centres in Darfur, with the country facing the possibility of partition.
But who are the RSF, and what role do international players like the UAE have here?
