- Description
- Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s January lecture at Addis Abeba University framed itself as a reflection on intellectuals, leadership, and national prosperity, defining who counts as an intellectual and assessing the role of ideas and academic institutions in Ethiopia’s history.
But who defines intellectuals? Why does it matter?
In this episode of The Standard Signal, Tsedale Lemma speaks with historian and public intellectual Ezekiel Gebissa to critically examine the lecture, probing what happens when power speaks in the language of ideas, and how this shapes intellectual autonomy and epistemic freedom.
Premiers at: 7:30 PM tonight.

Speaking to journalists in Addis Ababa, Olaf Skoog, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, said disputes should be resolved “through diplomacy in good faith,” as concerns grow over Red Sea security.
Addressing escalating rhetoric between Addis Ababa and Asmara, particularly over access to the Red Sea, Skoog urged both sides to step back from confrontational language and pursue cooperative approaches. He said the EU is ready to support de-escalation efforts and act as an “honest broker.”
On Somaliland, Skoog reaffirmed the EU’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting recognition and warning against actions that could further destabilize the region.

- The Standard Signal | Ep. 09: Red Sea Rubicon: Ethiopia at the Crossroads of the tectonic shift in Horn’s Geopolitics
The Horn of Africa is undergoing a tectonic political realignment. Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has reopened long-standing fissures between Somalia and Somaliland, while the intensifying rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the UAE for regional influence has forced Ethiopia’s strategic ally, the UAE, into retreat. Meanwhile, Egypt continues to apply sustained pressure on Addis Abeba, and the African Union struggles to uphold norms of sovereignty amid this rapidly shifting regional order.
At the center of this maelstrom is Ethiopia, which has declared Red Sea access “existential.” But what does this mean for its diplomacy? Is Addis Abeba pursuing a coherent strategy, or trapped in a zero-sum doctrine where compromise itself is illegitimate? Why did it fail to follow through on its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland? Wa...

In this episode of The Standard Signal, host Tsedale Lemma speaks with Taha Abdi, founding member of the Oromo Liberation Front and former executive committee member, who also participated in the OLA delegation to the Tanzania peace talks.
The conversation traces the broken path to peace - from the return of OLF fighters from Asmara in 2018, through contested disarmament and failed reintegration, to the Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam negotiations that collapsed without agreement in 2023.
This episode examines why security-first approaches overshadowed political dialogue, how mistrust hardened on all sides, and what these failures mean for the future of peace in Oromia and Ethiopia at large.

- In this episode of The Standard Signal, Tsedale Lemma engages historian and political analyst Ezekiel Gebissa on his powerful commentary “Worse Than Evil: How stupidity fueled Ethiopia into a raging inferno,” published on May 30 by Addis Standard.
Drawing on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theory of ‘cultivated stupidity”, Prof. Ezekiel examined how the current endless mass violence in Ethiopia is not only politically engineered but socially enabled - through silence, moral collapse, and the surrender of critical thought. From the failure of democratic transition to the normalization of cruelty, dehumanization and war, this conversation probes leadership, complicity, and the uncomfortable question of collective responsibility in times of atrocity.
