- Description
- Sporting straw hats and cotton checkered scarves to shield themselves from the blazing sun, hundreds of children and adults cheered Saturday as they netted freshwater catfish and snakefish in Boeung Kroam lake, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh.
The annual ceremony, back after a two-year pandemic hiatus, is held after the rice harvest and participants are allowed to use only traditional tools such as woven baskets and nets, Tbong Khmum province governor Cheam Chan Sophorn explained.
"It is a message to our villagers and especially fishermen not to use illegal equipment ... so that fish will be around for hundreds of years to come for our younger generations," he told AFP in the middle of the muddy lake. Cambodia – which boasts the Mekong River and its many tributaries – is reliant on fish as a source of protein for its population.

Similar scenes unfolded in the People’s Square in the northeastern port city of Dalian, according to the Twitter account @whyyoutouzhele.
Other clips showed a crowd of older people facing off with ranks of uniformed police officers three or four deep who linked arms and started shoving the crowd slowly to make it pull back. In one clip, an elderly man is seen lying on the ground with his head and legs propped up while people boo and shout at the police.

“Sometimes, the gun explodes on the shooter when it backfires. I’ve seen cases where the gun backfired on the shooter’s face. It’s very dangerous.”

- Angry workers clash with police in Chongqing after test-kit maker fires thousands | RFA
- Date posted

- Description
- Angry workers at a now-defunct COVID-19 test kit factory in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing clashed with police over the weekend, upset about unpaid wages after the company announced mass layoffs. Social media footage of the Saturday night protests showed people throwing traffic cones, boxes and stools at police with riot shields, while other clips uploaded to social media platforms showed a crowd of people shouting "Give us back our money!"

Local sources told Radio Free Asia that the protest erupted after Zybio announced it was laying off thousands of temporary workers urgently recruited last year to cover huge demand for test kits under the zero-COVID policy th...

Several posts shared on social media platforms said that the dispute erupted over the enforcement of on-arrival quarantine procedures for returnees, which require five days in a designated quarantine facility, then three days at the returnee’s residence. One of the posts mentioned that the returnees were students and tourists who wanted to avoid quarantine requirements ahead of January 8, when such restrictions for inbound travellers arriving from abroad will also be lifted.

- A massive fire in a Cambodia casino complex has killed at least 19 people and injured more than 30. The blaze at the Grand Diamond City Casino in Poipet, on the border with Thailand, broke out shortly before midnight on Wednesday. Reuters reported that about 400 staff and patrons were in the building when the fire broke out.
Photographs showed people shining lights from windows and clambering onto ledges to escape the flames as firefighters tried to control the blaze. Media in Thailand reported that many of the injured were Thai staff and customers of the casino.
Thai authorities said one Thai national was confirmed dead but did not disclose the name ahead of an autopsy. Thailand sent fire crews and helicopters to fight the blaze and evacuate the injured to hospitals across the border. Thailand’s Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said Thursday that 34 people were admitted to hospitals in Sa Kaeo province.
