- Teenagers from Luang Namtha province in Laos were promised well-paying casino jobs but instead found themselves held captive hundreds of kilometers from home in an obscure facility they called “Casino Kosai” near Myawaddy, on Myanmar's chaotic border with Thailand.
As the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the gambling businesses of regional criminal syndicates, the groups turned to online scams as a new source of revenue. These secretive operations have proliferated throughout Southeast Asia.
Trafficked young people from across the region are held captive and forced to perpetuate the scams. Failure to find enough victims can result in brutal beatings and other forms of torture. There is no escape for the trafficked victims unless families pay an exorbitant ransom to the captors.
Dozens of young people from Laos and other parts of Asia are still believed to be trapped at the Casino Kosai site, forced to work 16 hours a day in search of targets t...

- Cambodia's booming monkey trade, fueled by the global demand for medical research animals, has become an extremely profitable but shadowy business with ties to the nation's political elite. https://en.rfa.org/monkeybusiness
China was the world's top supplier of research primates when, in 2020, the country placed a ban on monkey exports to protect domestic COVID-19 vaccine research. As the virus spread and demand for research monkeys surged, Cambodia suddenly became the world's largest supplier of long tail macaques.
Allegations of illicit trade and fraudulent export permits have led to a high-profile legal case brought by U.S. prosecutors against Cambodian government officials, raising concerns about the origin of the monkeys being shipped worldwide.
Cambodian authorities deny any issues with illicit monkey trading, but conservationists have called for tighter regulations on monkey farms for over a decade. But the monkey business offers little i...

- What are the differences in speaking between North and South Korea? | Radio Free Asia (RFA)
- Date posted

- Description
- North Koreans are secretly watching and listening to so many South Korean movies and songs smuggled into the country that they are becoming increasingly worried that they might let a banned word slip – and face prison time or even death for using “capitalist” lingo, sources in the country tell Radio Free Asia.
“Residents who are already accustomed to the South Korean way of speaking now feel like they have to practice the Pyongyang dialect,” said a resident in the northwestern province of North Pyongan, referring to the capital.
“They are worried that South Korean words will unintentionally or unknowingly come out of their mouths and that they will be punished,” he said. For example, North Korean women dare not call their husbands or boyfriends “jagiya” (which correlates to honey) or “oppa” (another term of endearment that literally means older brother). Instead, they must stick with “dongji,” (comrade), the source said.
