- Dozens of vehicles crashed in a major pileup on a bridge in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou in Henan province on Wednesday, eyewitness footage shared on social media showed. One person was killed in the incident, state broadcaster CCTV said. Rescuers said more than 200 vehicles had slammed into each other, state media reported, attributing the cause of the crash to extremely foggy conditions.
In footage shared on Weibo, several cars and trucks could be seen crumpled and piled on top of each other on the Zhengxin Huanghe bridge as people meandered about. One emergency vehicle could be seen in the background.

- This stadium in Beijing has been turned into a makeshift fever clinic as authorities in China reported five more deaths.
It is one of hundreds of similar centers that are being added to major cities.
Efforts to expand intensive care units and build these clinics are ramping up across the country, in a desperate bid to prevent the wider spread of contagious disease in hospitals -
Mounting signs the virus is battering China's fragile health system.
China this month began dismantling its stringent "zero-COVID" regime of lockdowns and testing after protests against curbs.
Now, as the virus sweeps through a country of 1.4 billion people who lack natural immunity, having been shielded for so long, there is growing concern about possible deaths, virus mutations, and the impact on the economy and trade.

- Sri Lankan navy rescues 105 Rohingya adrift in boat | Radio Free Asia (RFA)

- Description
- Sri Lanka's navy has rescued 104 Rohingya adrift off the Indian Ocean island's northern coast, an official said on Monday, as members of the Muslim minority continue to escape violence in Myanmar and hardship in Bangladesh refugee camps. Many Rohingya risk their lives every year by attempting to reach Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia on rickety vessels, and their numbers have surged following deteriorating conditions in the camps and last year's military coup in Myanmar.
The boat was first detected by the Sri Lanka Navy when it was 3.5 nautical miles (6.5 km) from shore and a search and rescue operation was launched to eventually tow the vessel to a northern harbor on Sunday night, a navy spokesperson, Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya, said.
A navy statement said 104 Myanmar nationals were found aboard a small trawler suspected to have originated from Myanmar and was heading to Indonesia when it ran into engine trouble in rough seas. Accor...

- Patients receive IV drips on street and in cars amid China COVID surge | Radio Free Asia (RFA)
- Date posted
- Description
- Patients were seen receiving intravenous (IV) drips on the street outside a clinic in Xiaogan, in central China's Hubei province in a video released Wednesday, Dec. 14, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.
In another video obtained by Reuters and released on Monday, Dec. 12, patients were seen receiving IV drips from inside their cars parked outside a hospital in the city of Hanchuan of the same province. China reported 2,000 new symptomatic COVID-19 infections for Dec. 14, compared with 2,291 a day earlier, the National Health Commission said on Thursday. As of Dec. 14, mainland China had confirmed 371,918 cases with symptoms.
The sudden loosening of COVID-19 restrictions this month has sparked long queues outside fever clinics in a worrying sign that a wave of infections is building, even though official tallies of new cases have trended lower recently as authorities eased back on testing.

- China loosens COVID restrictions in wake of anti-lockdown protests | Radio Free Asia (RFA)
- Date posted
- Description
- China on Wednesday announced a further loosening of its COVID-19 prevention measures, allowing the majority of cases and contacts to quarantine at home in an apparent bid to stave off further anti-lockdown protests and kickstart the economy.
Under the new rules, anyone found to have mild or no symptoms following a positive test for the virus will be allowed to isolate at home if they choose, the country's health ministry told a news conference in Beijing. A positive test result had previously meant a person could be hauled off willy-nilly by bus to a quarantine camp, often located a long way out of town, and made to pay for room and board in often substandard facilities.
The directive also warns local authorities not to designate an area "high risk" without good cause, and bans any form of forcible confinement or barriers in areas under lockdown. "Non-high-risk areas shall not restrict the flow of people, and shall not suspend work, production, or business," t...

Large crowds of demonstrators, many of them young people, held banners and chanted slogans outside the Government Palace in Sukhbaatar Square, demanding officials to exit the grand building and face the people. Some protesters later jostled violently with police as they tried to storm the building.
"A lot of government members are richer and live (more) luxurious lives than the citizens, and how could they just be so calm when the citizens are buying bread by (the) slice, not by the loaf? That's the reason why I'm protesting today for the good of the people," one protester said.
Monday’s events were the culmination of a brewing public outcry over the past two months, centered around an alleged corruption scandal involving officials p...
