- It's that time of year again — as temperatures warm, Salt Lake streets will start filling with hundreds of bicyclists for the 999 Thursday night ride.
Love it or hate it, the 999 Bike Ride is a staple of Thursday nights in Salt Lake.
"It is fun,” one person told 2News.
And while most people are just in it for a fun ride with the community, there have been some controversial moments in the past, including taking up the entire road or even accusations of vandalism and property damage.

Artemis II builds on the success of Artemis I, which tested the spacecraft without a crew. This mission takes the next step — sending astronauts around the moon to evaluate systems designed to support human life in deep space.
During the flight, the crew traveled in a wide orbit around the moon, allowing them to test navigation and view parts of the lunar surface not seen during previous missions.
The success of Artemis II is expected to help pave the way for future missions, including landing astronauts on the moon again and eventually sending humans to Mars.

Last month, the university announced Sharon McMahon as its commencement speaker. The university described her as a “New York Times-bestselling author, award-winning educator and ‘America’s Government Teacher.’” She has been selected to keynote the annual commencement and will also receive an honorary Doctor of Education degree.
In a statement, university President Astrid S. Tuminez said, “Sharon McMahon is an original. She is a force of nature and a force for good. As a former history teacher, she understands that education can inform, inspire and instigate courageous action.”
The university also said “her ongoing efforts to empower informed discussions and civil disagreements pair well with UVU’s ‘Our Better Selves for a Better America’ initiative,” and that her appearance is “highly anticipated.”

From writing reports to scanning license plates, AI tools are already being used by police departments across the country. Now, as Provo looks to upgrade technology in its police vehicles, city leaders are addressing whether AI will play a role locally.
After a recent request for proposals revealed plans for new in-car cameras, the proposal asked companies to outline features such as automated license plate readers and other advanced technologies, prompting questions about potential AI use. The plans specifically asked companies to describe any Automated License Plate Readers capability and possible Flock integration.

Less than an hour after the game, Utah (42-30-6) clinched a playoff berth in its second season when the Anaheim Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks 6-1. The Mammoth sit in the first Western Conference wild card spot with 90 points and have a six-point lead over Nashville.
Kailer Yamamoto, Nick Schmaltz and captain Lawson Crouse also scored for Utah, and Karel Vejmelka stopped 29 shots.
Erik Haula had Nashville's goal and Juuse Saros made 23 saves.
Yamamoto, who only played 12 NHL games last season, scored his 12th goal to open the scoring with 5:33 to go in the first period. He deflected in a puck off a cross-crease pass from Guenther for his second goal in the last three games.

- Fifteen murals in Ogden were removed after someone graffitied over them on the back of Ogden Pioneer Stadium. City officials said the damage was too extensive to repair.
The artwork had been visible on the back of the stadium for nearly 20 years. On April 10, the walls were painted gray.
Mark Kraft, who walks the trail almost every day, happened to pass by as the city painted over the murals.

- A motorcyclist was taken into custody on Thursday night after allegedly fleeing from police.
The rider, identified as 20-year-old Colton David Hymas, was caught after stopping for gas at a gas station near Mountain View Corridor and Academy Parkway in Herriman.
According to court documents, Utah Highway Patrol first saw Hymas and another motorcyclist speeding through traffic on I-15. Hymas reportedly sped up and fled when a trooper turned on his lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop.

- Florida police thought they were responding to a home intruder, but instead they were met with a huge gator.
The Tampa Police Department said a little after 3 a.m. on March 29, officers responded to a residence only to find that an alligator had broken into the home and let itself in for a swim in the homes pool.
Body camera video shows officers walking up to the home, when all of a sudden there is a loud bang followed by a hissing sound.
With help from an alligator trapper, the alligator was safely removed.

- Gunshots rang out on Easter Sunday, with one of the people shot seen in surveillance video running to get help from a group of people, including one dressed as an Easter Bunny.
The Bakersfield Police Department said on April 4, 2026, at around 4:48 p.m., officers were called to reports of a shooting in the 4700 block of Half Dome Way.
When they arrived, officers found an ongoing dispute between residents and two people, a man and a boy, who had arrived in a vehicle. Both the man and the boy had minor injuries and had loaded guns with them.
Other victims were also found and taken to the hospital.
Once medically cleared, both the boy and the man will be booked into the Kern County Juvenile Hall Facility and the Kern County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and other firearms-related charges.
