In each instance, federal resources poured into the affected area, helping people with temporary housing, loans, counseling and legal services -- and helping the community rebuild.

- Three people are in the hospital, two of them toddlers, after a house fire Wednesday morning in Greektown. According to fire officials, at around 10:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the 600 block of Oldham Street for a reported fire in the basement of a two-story rowhome. "They performed a search and rescue operation where they located a child in the basement who was overcome with smoke and suffered some burns," fire spokesperson Kevin Cartwright said. "An adult male rushed inside the dwelling, and he was able to successfully rescue another child."

- A protest in support of Palestine entered its second day in a largely visual format as part of a so-called "solidarity encampment" in the "liberation zone" in north Baltimore. Protesters returned Wednesday to a common area of the Johns Hopkins University campus known as "The Beach." Student protest leaders hammered out an agreement with the university president late Monday night that the school would ensure safety of peaceful protests from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the students promised no tents or overnight camping. Officials said the pact was announced and most of the students left, but a few stragglers remained and started putting up tents before dawn on Tuesday. On Wednesday, there was a "high noon prayer" with a smattering of speakers on an open mic as the encampment took over almost half of the greenspace between the Hopkins library and North Charles Street.

Vignarajah, 47, announced his decision Wednesday afternoon and endorsed former mayor Sheila Dixon's campaign. Speaking to why he endorsed the former mayor, Vignarajah unleashed a tirade against incumbent Mayor Brandon Scott, alleging "failed leadership" and saying there's more at stake to this election than just politics. But Scott's campaign told 11 News shortly after Vignarajah's announcement that Vignarajah offered his endorsement to the mayor in exchange to become police commissioner or CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools. The mayor's campaign told 11 News that Scott and Vignarajah spoke earlier Wednesday morning, and the mayor said he absolutely cannot do that and that he does not do backroom deals.

- Postal carriers say it's time for Americans to deliver for them. At a rally Tuesday in Baltimore, carriers said assaults and robberies are occurring on their routes, and they have had enough. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, 23 robberies and assaults have happened in the Baltimore area since 2022. Officials said it's a nationwide issue, and they're counting on a bill in Congress to punish attackers and deter future crime. "The letter carriers are literally having guns put up to their faces and demanding the postal items," union representative Antoine Vaughn said. They're placing their hopes in H.R. 7629, the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act of 2024.

- DNA evidence linked a man to three killings in Aberdeen, police announced Tuesday afternoon. Michael Anthony Swann, 35, was charged Friday with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree arson, reckless endangerment and multiple other charges. At the time of the killings, Swann was prohibited from legally possessing firearms, police said. Police said the charges stem from an early morning triple-homicide on April 15. Police on Tuesday identified the victims as John C. Claytor, 54, Talaya D. Wiley, 48, and Melissa L. Williams, 45, all of Aberdeen.
