- Doorstep statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ahead of the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union in Defence Ministers’ format, Tuesday 28 May 2024, Brussels, Belgium.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Good morning.
I'm looking forward to meeting the EU Defence Ministers and to discuss our support for Ukraine. Since day one of this war, NATO and the European Union have worked very closely together to provide unprecedented military, economic, and financial support to Ukraine. And therefore, it's always useful to sit down with the ministers and discuss how to sustain our support and step up what we do.
The most urgent need now is more air defence. And we are working with NATO Allies, and many of them also of course EU members, on stepping up the delivery of ammunition, air defence systems, and in particular the most advanced ones, the Patriot systems.
So, we have seen some progress. But more pr...

And it's great to be back in Sofia and to meet with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. As I've said so many, many times before, for me it is a privilege to meet with parliamentarians across the Alliance and from partner nations, because I know that at the end of the day, it is parliaments that decide what really matters for NATO. The budgets, that commitment to our collective defence. And also parliaments represent the democratic institutions that NATO is established to defend.
So therefore, I always look forward to this opportunity to engage with you, to say some words about where we are at the NATO Headquarters and then to engage in Q&A sessions with parliamentarian...

🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
On International Women's Day, I honour the countless women who have shaped and strengthened NATO since the founding of our Alliance 75 years ago.
Their resilience, sacrifice, and dedication have been paramount to our success.
We have come a long way in integrating gender perspectives into our policies and operations, but our work is far from over.
Too often, and in too many places, women face inequality and injustice.
Too often, and in too many places, women are the primary victims of armed conflict.
Today, I also pay special tribute to the brave women of Ukraine,
Who continue to fight for their families, their freedom, and their future.

🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Today, we mark two years since Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine.
Starting the biggest war in Europe since World War Two.
Let me begin by honouring all those brave Ukrainians who have fallen or been wounded in defence of their homeland.
The situation on the battlefield remains extremely serious.
President Putin’s aim to dominate Ukraine has not changed.
And there are no indications that he is preparing for peace.
But we must not lose heart.
Ukraine has demonstrated remarkable skill and fierce determination again and again.
Ukraine did not collapse in weeks, as many feared it would.
You have recaptured half of the territory seized by Russia.
Pushed Russia back from large parts of the Black Sea.

- Press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg following the meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence in Brussels, 15 February 2024.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Good afternoon,
NATO defence ministers met today to prepare for the Washington Summit in July.
Last year in Vilnius, we took major decisions to strengthen our deterrence and defence.
Today, we accelerated work on resourcing our new defence plans, and strengthening our transatlantic defence industrial base.
This requires investment.
And we are on the right track.
I expect 18 Allies to spend 2% of their GDP on defence this year.
A six-fold increase from only 3 Allies in 2014.
In 2024, NATO Allies in Europe will invest a total of 380 billion US dollars in defence.
For the first time, this amounts to 2% of their total GDP.
By the end of 2024, European Allies and Canada will have added more th...

We will address our defence industrial capacity.
We are ramping up production of much needed weapons and ammunition. For Ukraine’s security, and for ours.

🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Today, NATO defense ministers will meet to address our support to Ukraine, and how to further strengthen our deterrence and defense.
And to do both, we need to invest more, and we are on the right track. Because we now have historic numbers when it comes to defense investments. Last year, we saw an 11% real increase in defense spending across Europe and Canada. This year, we expect 18 Allies to meet the target of spending 2% of GDP on defense. And European Allies together spend 280 billion US dollars on defense. And this is 2% of their combined GDP.
But we still have a way to go. Because at our Summit in Vilnius last year, all Allies promised to spend 2% of GDP on defense, and 2% is a minimum.
Then, later on today, I will chair a meeting of the NATO...

It is important for me to tell you that what you produce here, what you do here every day, is making NATO stronger and all of us safer and more secure.
That has always been the case, but it’s even more so now with a full-fledged war going on in Europe, a war of aggression launched by President Putin and Russia.
And where weapons produced by Lockheed Martin, by you, has made a huge difference on the battlefield.
I just saw how Javelins are produced. And that was important for me.
But it is important that you fully realise how important those missiles were, especially at the beginning of the war, because when the invasion of Ukraine started in February 2022. Most experts feared and believed that Russia would take control over Kyiv the capital of Ukraine and the rest of Ukrain...
