The Las Vegas City Council recognized Onofrio “No-No” Zicari, a 98-year-old World War II veteran, for receiving a purple heart and for being the October 2021 Citizen of the Month.
June 6, 1944, Private First Class Onofrio “No-No” Zicari took part in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach. He was wounded by German shrapnel during the invasion. Due to the chaotic nature of the battle, and due to the death of the field medic in battle who had treated him initially, these injuries went undocumented. For more than 75 years, Zicari, now 98 years old, had been denied a Purple Heart medal. After many coming together to assist him, Zicari now was officially presented his Purple Heart by a U.S. Army representative at the Council meeting. Beginning September 28th, the Pfizer booster shot will be available at Las Vegas health district clinics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine for those who are at higher risk for COVID-19. Also, Clark County has hit a milestone with 70 percent of people 12 and older receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA has approved a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine for certain populations under its emergency use authorization. Those groups include people age 65 years or older. People between the ages of 18-64 who are at risk of developing severe cases of COVID-19 are also on the list as well as frontline workers. Also, many Nevada small businesses could soon receive some CARES money to help with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021 Life is Beautiful Festival came back to the city after being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Life is Beautiful was a success and a welcomed boost to the downtown Las Vegas economy.

Construction on UNLV’s new medical education building is coming along and actually a little bit ahead of schedule. The 9-acre headquarters for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine will be located in downtown Las Vegas in the Medical District.
