- Hostages still being held as Israel prepares for Rafah offensive | DW News
- Date posted

- Description
- About 130 hostages remain unaccounted for after being kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 last year - at least 34 of them are presumed dead. The hostages captured or killed are believed to have been spread out among different members and factions of Hamas, as well as other groups. Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by many governments, including the US, Germany and the EU.
For the families of the hostages, it feels impossible to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Passover, known as the festival of freedom.
Meanwhile, Israel says it's moving ahead with its plans for a ground offensive into Rafah, despite intense international criticism.
The Israeli government claims that the bulk of Hamas' remaining forces are hiding in the southern Gazan city, where over a million internally displaced Gazans are also now living. The offensive is part of Israel's response to the Hamas terror attacks of October 7.

Among his maze of legal problems, the top court's decision could have the biggest impact on Trump's third run for the White House later this year — as well as setting a precedent for future US presidents.

- Why has Weinstein's conviction been overturned? | DW News

- New York's highest court on Thursday overturned the 2020 conviction of disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein on sex crimes charges. The Court of Appeals ruled that the trial judge erred in admitting testimony from women who were not named in the accusations against Weinstein and ordered a new trial.
However, the ruling doesn't affect a separate 16-year rape conviction handed down in California in 2022, meaning the once untouchable Hollywood heavyweight will remain behind bars.
Bombshell allegations against the Oscar-winning producer emerged in 2017, sparking the #MeToo movement, which paved the way for women to fight back against sexual violence in the workplace.

- What's behind the growing US protests against the war in Gaza? | DW News
- Date posted

- Description
- Pro-Palestinian protests continue in the US. Several universities have turned to law enforcement authorities to break up gatherings. Several colleges have closed campuses, and hundreds of students have been arrested. Los Angeles police said on Thursday that 93 people had been arrested for trespassing at the University of Southern California (USC) amid protests over the mounting death toll in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The pro-Palestinian protest at USC was among the latest to take place at campuses across the United States that have seen confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement. The Israel-Hamas war was sparked by the Hamas-led terror attacks in southern Israel on October 7 that left around 1,200 people dead and saw 250 taken hostage. Since then, Israel has launched an expansive ground offensive throughout the Palestinian territory, which Hamas-led health authorities said has killed over 34,300 people, mainly women and children, and led to a humanitarian crisis.

Russian environmentalists are raising the alarm over a potential radioactive leak. The source: the Dobrovolnoye uranium mine located near Kurgan on the Russian-Kazakh border. The mine contains over 7,000 tons of Uranium and is in the path of rising floodwaters. Flooding means it's possible that radioactive material could poison rivers and freshwater sources in the region. The Russian nuclear energy agency Rosatom says that small amounts of uranium in drinking water are unproblematic, and they're accusing the population of “radiophobia”. Is the issue being downplayed?

- Satellite images appear to show tent compounds near Rafah ahead of a possible Israeli offensive
- Date posted
- Description
- Israel has said that it is preparing to evacuate Palestinians from the southern Gazan city of Rafah and launch its long-awaited offensive. The Israeli government claims that the bulk of Hamas' remaining forces are hiding in Rafah. The Islamist militant group Hamas carried out the October
7 terror attacks that triggered the war. Over a million internally displaced Gazans are now living in Rafah. Media reports say Israel has bought 40,000 tents to accommodate those who will be forced to move again once it begins its assault, but this has yet to be officially confirmed. Satellite images show collections of tents near the city that were not there earlier this month.

- Ukraine has stopped issuing new passports to some military-aged men living abroad as part of a bid to pressure them to return home to fight. The move is temporary and comes the day after the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry suspended consular services for men from 18 to 60 years old. Long queues formed at passport offices in European countries after Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced the measures. The limits come shortly after Ukraine adopted a new, stricter mobilization policy to shore up forces amid gains by Russia on the battlefield.

- Why Amnesty International singles out Israel for its crackdown on critics | DW News

- Amnesty International has said the world is seeing a near breakdown of international law. It cites multiple conflicts and the rise of artificial intelligence as the main threats. The annual report on human rights singles out Israel and its allies. In the weeks following Hamas's terror attack on October 7 last year, Israeli authorities cracked down on protests criticizing the Israeli military response. Palestinian citizens were arrested for participating in protests or posting on social media. DW Special Correspondent Amien Essif met up with human rights lawyer Ahmad Khalefa who was himself arrested at a protest and charged with "incitement to terrorism."

- Blinken in China: What's on the agenda? | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in China for a three-day visit, amid growing tensions between the two countries. Blinken is expected to discuss a number of issues, including China’s support for Russia. The US says China is helping Russia's war effort in Ukraine, adding that it damages US security. This comes as the US Congress passed a bill to ban the social media platform TikTok, unless its Chinese owner sells off its US assets. Lawmakers have been concerned about possible Chinese government control of TikTok. ByteDance has denied that it shares sensitive user data with the Chinese government. TikTok has about 170 million users in the US. Blinken's visit comes at a particularly tense time between China and the US: What are the main issues that will be discussed during Blinken's visit?
