- Could gene therapy be a gamechanger in the fight against sickle-cell anemia? | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- There might be fresh hope for millions of people affected by Sickle Cell Disease. In the US, a new commercially licensed gene therapy has been administered for the first time to a patient.
It could be a gamechanger in the fight against this disorder of unusually-shaped red blood cells that can disrupt the victims' blood flow. This leads to severe health complications including chronic pain and organ damage, which can also be life threatening.
The genetic condition is found around the world but mainly among people with West or Central African backgrounds. According to the World Health Organization 1,000 children are born with the disease every day in Africa. And the existing treatments can be rare and expensive.

- How are aid workers able to do their work in Rafah? | DW News
- Date posted

- Description
- More aid has started arriving in Gaza via a temporary floating pier built by US forces.
Israel's military published footage reportedly showing the first deliveries arriving at Gaza's coastline. It's hoped more than 100 trucks a day will come ashore carrying food and other vital supplies.
The United Nations welcomed the new entry point, but said the floating pier couldn't be relied on to solve Gaza's hunger crisis.
For more on this, we talk to Olga Cherevko. She is a spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. She joins us from Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

- Heavy fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas in northern Gaza | DW News
- Date posted

- Description
- An old frontline has apparently reopened in the war between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters in Gaza. Witnesses describe heavy fighting in and around the town of Jabaliya in northern Gaza. Israel's army described the clashes as 'perhaps the fiercest' in over seven months of war.
Hours earlier, the Israeli military announced that it had recovered the bodies of three Israeli hostages in Gaza.
Among them is German-Israeli Shani Louk, whose body was seen in the back of a pickup truck in videos of the October 7 terror attack. She was declared dead later that month after fragments of her skull were found. The army says she, along with Amit Buskila and Itzhak Gelerenter, were killed by Hamas at the Nova music festival and their bodies taken into Gaza.

Here in Europe, policy makers and analysts are digesting the impact of US President Joe Biden's decision to impose a 100 percent tariff on electric cars from China. Some describe the gesture as largely symbolic, given that the United States imports only a small volume of vehicles from China. - Will Gaza aid pier be enough to save famine-stricken Palestinians? | DW News

Trucks rolled across the pier for the first time, bringing aid into the besieged enclave as Israeli restrictions continue to disrupt deliveries of vital food and other supplies at Gaza border crossings. The US and aid groups hope to increase deliveries at the pier to as many as 150 trucks per day.
Despite the efforts, the head of the UN's food program says there’s a “full-blown famine” in northern Gaza.

- As Vladimir Putin visits China for the second time in just over six months, he has one clear goal: to make sure President Xi Jinping continues to support the Russian war economy.
In other words, that China keeps buying Russian oil and in turn exports goods that keep both the Russian population and its military going.
DW Business speaks with Fraser Howie, co-author of three books on China and a close watcher of the country's economy.

- Live: South Africa asks top UN court to stop Israel's Rafah offensive | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- South Africa is asking the UN's top court to order Israel to stop its offensive in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.
The hearing is part of a broader case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, which Israel has repeatedly denied.
The International Court of Justice will hear arguments from South Africa's lawyers on Thursday, with Israel giving its response on Friday.
Earlier this month, the South African government petitioned the court to order Israel to "immediately withdraw and cease its military offensive."
It also asked the court to order Israel to allow unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip for aid groups, UN officials, as well as investigators and journalists.
South Africa began its case against Israel at the ICJ in January, accusing the country of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel has denied the accusation, calling it "grossly distorted" and saying that the case wa...

- A new era for Dutch politics? Far-right Geert Wilders to join government | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- The Netherlands looks set to have its most right wing government in decades, after a deal was reached between four parties following months of negotiations.
The announcement was made by anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, whose Party for Freedom received the most votes in last November's elections.
It's still not clear who will become prime minister. Wilders' hardline views on Islam meant he had to step aside from taking that role so a deal could be reached.

- ‘My time will come’: Why Thai politician Pita Limjaroenrat won’t give up | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- Former Thai opposition leader Pita Limjaroenrat speaks to DW about Thailand’s future and his hopes to still some day become prime minister.
Pita led the reformist Move Forward party to winning the most seats in last year’s elections, only to be blocked from becoming prime minister. The party was also shut out of the governing coalition. Pita subsequently resigned as leader and was briefly suspended from parliament.
Now Move Forward is threatened by a potential dissolution order from Thailand’s Constitutional Court next month, after judges said its policies to reform laws on defaming the royal family were unconstitutional.
Thailand has notoriously strict lèse majesté laws. Hundreds of activists have been imprisoned in recent years for breaching them.
28-year-old royal reform activist Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom was jailed in January on charges of defaming the royal family, after conducting public opinion polls on Thai ...

- Georgia's youth are furious over the 'foreign influence' law passed by the parliament | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- The day after Georgia's parliament passed the controversial "foreign influence law," protests continue. On Wednesday, some 30,000 people gathered in front of the parliament in the capital, Tbilisi, alone. The foreign ministers of Estonia, Iceland and Lithuania, who were visiting Georgia, also joined the protests. There were also demonstrations in the cities of Kutaisi and Zalendzhikha in the west of the country.
Young people in particular took to the streets to show their discontent. Georgia has officially been a candidate for EU membership since December. With the new law, however, a European future for the Caucasus country is hardly conceivable.
