- Children in Haiti are “terrorised and traumatised” by the gang violence which continues across the country’s capital, killing people and forcing them to flee their homes. That’s according to the UNICEF representative in the Caribbean island country, Bruno Maes.
Armed gangs reportedly now control 80 to 90 per cent of Port-au-Prince, and over 360,000 people – the majority of them children – have been displaced.
Mr. Maes said there is a growing sense of desperation and a lack of hope among people who have been struggling to survive through a period of Haitian history characterised by a confluence of humanitarian, economic, political and security crises.
UN News’s Daniel Dickinson asked Mr. Maes about the current situation in the beleaguered country.

Deepening divisions and growing inequalities are leaving people with a heightened sense of anxiety and even fear.
Guterres said, “The concept of Human Security, with its emphasis on people and prevention, has an important role to play in strengthening links at the local, national and regional levels, and creating momentum to tackle our shared challenges.”
He told the General Assembly that he commissioned the fourth report on Human Security to foster this dynamic and contribute to a safer, more prosperous, more secure world for all.

- The Haitian economy may be on its knees, but the gangs that control much of the capital Port-au-Prince seem to have little trouble obtaining guns, mainly from the USA.
The country is awash with weapons: according to experts convened by the UN Secretary-General, these “deadly arsenals” mean that gangs have “firepower that exceeds that of the Haitian national police,” and the problem is getting worse.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has reported an increase in the trafficking of increasingly powerful and sophisticated weapons into the country since 2021, such as AK47, AR15 and Galil rifles.

- Gaza: Tent Made from 13,000 Can Symbolizes Lack of Fresh Food | United Nations
- Date posted

- Description
- A tent made from 13,000 cans symbolizes the severe lack of fresh food in Gaza, where malnutrition is rising, especially among children.
Around 60 to 70 per cent of meat- and dairy-producing livestock in Gaza have been either killed or prematurely slaughtered to meet the dire food needs stemming from the conflict.
To help Gazans, FAO has mobilised to provide key agricultural supplies into the Strip “as soon as conditions allow”. The organization said that its initial priority was to move animal feed, including 1,500 tonnes of barley, “through one or two of the remaining open border crossings where food distribution is taking place”.
This barley delivery “should be sufficient to provide milk for all children under 10 years of age in Gaza”, FAO said, noting that it would amount to around 20 per cent of recommended calories for children.

- Gaza Crisis: UN Chief Urges Immediate Action After 196 Aid Workers Killed | United Nations

- Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the devastating Israeli airstrikes that killed World Central Kitchen personnel bring the number of aid workers killed in this conflict to 196, is "unconscionable.” He reiterated that the Security Council resolution “must be implemented without delay.”
The Secretary-General addressed the General Assembly on human security today (02 Apr).
He recalled his recent Ramadan solidarity visit to Egypt and Jordan, noting that the words “human security”, makes him to think about the two million humans in Gaza who have no security at all, desperately seeking protection from hunger, disease, and relentless Israeli bombardment.
And he thinks about Israelis who feel a terrible absence of human security deeply traumatized by the terror attacks of 7 October.
Nothing can ever justify those attacks, but nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people in Gaza, Guterres said.
