With only 1000 pandas left in the wild and 125 in captivity, researchers are trying to understand why adult pandas are becoming more sedentary and refusing to reproduce. Some suggest Viagra or "panda-rated" videos might help increase their desire. Meanwhile, artificial insemination may be the only way to avoid extinction.

Sandwiched into bulletproof vests, we join the police on their daily beat. They are the frontline against a Mexican crime wave that is the worst in living memory, and they’re ill equipped to deal with it. They risk their lives for just $200 per month, and with that they must buy all their own kit, from the shirts on their backs to the bullets in their guns. “The state pretends to pay properly and the police pretend to work properly, and it’s the public who suffer the consequences,” is the word from disillusioned ex-cops. Mexico’s finest are also seriously compromised by corruption. The head of a police investigation unit says he realised “…that I couldn’t trust the police chiefs.” For the straight policemen, the blight of corruption saps their m...

Troops are heavy on the ground, yet there is little left to defend. Buildings lie in charred ruins along the main shopping street, a now dangerous no-mans land between Muslim and Christian neighbours. The violence has left tens of thousands hardened and homeless. They live in sectarian sectors of the city under tarpaulin unable to return to the ruins of their homes. Ambon’s tragedy is baffling. Muslim leader Jusef Ely blames shadowy forces, perhaps rogue military officers, gangsters, even politicians in Jakarta for exploiting religious tensions. “Catch all the provocateurs, bring them to court and give them hard punishments,” is his solution. As the shells rain down on Taloquan in north Afghanistan, Massoud and his mujaheddin run to return fire. But it's too late for the victims of the attack. The 55 dead, as so often, are civilians. As the gateway to the North, Taloquan is coveted by the warring parties. It remains one of the few areas which the Taliban have yet to conquer, in spite of a strong summer offensive. Massoud is still the best hope secular Afghans have of evicting the Taliban and well aware he needs to hang on to the area. As helicopters fly in tons of arms for Massoud's forces, the whisper is they're coming from Iran. Islamic fundamentalism lurks even in Massoud's supposedly secular territory. In Australia, 250,000 people are missing; disproportionately, the missing are indigenous women. In 2014, an indigenous woman named Joan Anderson disappeared from the town of Mataranka. Her family feels the case received insufficient attention. 'Nobody kept looking. I don't know what they've been doing', says Joan's cousin Evelyn. In cases such as Joan's, some argue that the perception of Aboriginal women as 'itinerant' means their cases are not taken seriously: 'there is a large view that they just lead a very casual life and therefore have just taken off or gone walkabout', explains Dorinda Cox, a senator and indigenous woman. They dismiss the white supremacist stereotype levelled at them by black pressure groups incredulous that so many are keen to celebrate an era of slavery. As part of their attempt to hold back the 21st century they're campaigning against a road-widening scheme across one battleground. With booming currencies and stocks, gold is no longer the most profitable way for central banks to hold reserves. At the East Rand goldmine this cold reality has hit. The rapt faces of miners contort in despair as union leaders announce the mine’s closure. Back in the gold fields, families gather to mourn the loss of 19 men in an underground gas explosion. Tragic as it is, the lives of these miners may be little compared to what the collapse of gold mining could do across South Africa.

On top of this political upheaval, just 11 days after the Taliban took Afghanistan's capital, Islamic State launched the first of several attacks in the country. These attacks have killed hundreds of civilians, and shattered any hope of a lasting peace or stability in Afghanistan. Now, Norwegian Paul Refsdal reports, the Taliban is waging their own War on Terror in the Eastern province of Nangarhar - the birthplace of the Afghan branch of the Islamic State. Liz Cheney, who represents Wyoming in Congress, is the embodiment of the Republican establishment. The daughter of the former US Vice President Dick Cheney, she rose to be the highest-ranking Republican woman in Congress and is famously conservative. In the past, she has consistently backed Trump in office, but now is one of his most vocal critics, attacking him for refusing to concede defeat in the 2020 election, and for his actions on January 6. ‘It’s a battle between the Trump Republican Party and the Republican Party of the past’, says Mary Kay Turner, a friend of the Cheney family. As she seeks her party’s nomination for a 4th term in Congress, Donald Trump is going all out to stop he...

Belgrade is a city cloaked in propaganda, peddled by a media intimidated by Milosevic's new law which exposes any group criticising him to fines and closure. Yet some newspapers manage to go on. The 'Dnevni' gives a voice to those who want to see an end to the old communist regime and to the violence committed in the name of Serbian nationalism. Tapping out their dissent on computers in Belgrade they e-mail their work to newspaper presses 400 miles away in the Yugoslavian province of Montenegro. The paper is then printed up and smuggled back into Serbia. The operation has the full backing of the province's President, Milo Djukanovic. He hopes Milosevic will fall by popular S...

The price of rice here has quadrupled. Many of Kuito's poorest citizens are now starving. Scenes in the hospital are reminiscent of medieval torture. The doctors here fled when fighting intensified. Now there are only nurses who have received crash training in the practice of amputation. Without the necessary skills and equipment, this rough and ready treatment is all Angola's thousands of mine victims can hope for. Outside of Kuito, government forces are successfully fending off UNITA attacks. In some of the first frontline footage out of Angola, we witness the full horror of the skirmishes. Soldiers here do not take prisoners of war - they only kill. By ringing Kuito with mines the rebels are h...

Indonesia continues to grapple with sectarian and ethnic violence. Nowhere more so than on the remote island of Ambon. This once peaceful island has become the unlikely battleground for a bitter conflict between Muslims and Christians. In the past two months some two hundred people have been killed and thousands of buildings have been destroyed. Just after this film was released, twelve students died in some of the worst violence since the student riots in Jakarta the year before, giving rise to fears that religious violence will erupt through the rest of the archipelago unless the government resolves the tensions in Ambon.

Azizah is a political wife whose ordeal has a familiar ring to it. This wife and mother has been recruited as a leader for the biggest push for reform in Malaysia’s history. “I wouldn’t think I would be a politician, because my role was the wife, bringing in the tea and looking after the children.” Azizah has become hugely popular. Massive crowds gather at her speeches, and when she hints that she’ll stand in the forthcoming elections they applaud even louder. So is she going to be Prime Minister? No, says her d...

Now, the Taliban is waging their own War on Terror in the Eastern province of Nangarhar - the birthplace of the Afghan branch of the Islamic State. The day Roe v Wade was overturned, Alabama criminalized abortion. 'This is really dangerous for people. People are going to die', says Dr Sanithia Williams, a doctor at one of three clinics in Alabama which have now had to close. Like Williams, many fear that risky ‘backyard’ abortions might become the norm now that medical care is unavailable. Pro-choice activist Kathy Zentner, who worked as a clinic escort, is concerned that birth control may be pro-lifer's next target: 'They like to say that birth control pills and IUDs cause abortion, and they're going after those next'. Alabama has one of the harshest laws against Abortion in the states, with abortion not permitted even in the case of rape or incest. 'How do you determine if it was rape or incest?' says attorney Eric...

We look at the front line of Eritrean soldiers, men alongside women, defending their border against a one-time friend. Since hostilities broke out between newly independent Ethiopia and Eritrea two years ago, the world has looked on helplessly. Both countries won their freedom by fighting against the harsh Mengistu regime. Why they are now fighting each other is a question few can answer.
