- Israel's ongoing massacre in Gaza has stirred worldwide calls for a ceasefire to stop the genocide unfolding. The United States has been no exception, which countless demonstrators taking to the streets in recent weeks. That hasn't stopped the US government from backing Israel's horrific campaign in Gaza to the hilt. The White House has refused to heed calls for a ceasefire and even deployed two aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean—not to defend Palestinians, but to dissuade regional powers from joining the fray to defend Palestine. As the possibility of a regional war looms with the entry of Yemen into the conflict, many wonder how the US might respond to such a scenario. Former US Congressperson Dennis Kucinich joins The Chris Hedges Report for a discussion on the US war machine—what it is, how it works, and how it might respond should the war in Palestine spiral into a wider conflagration.

"It's a closure, it's a curfew, in many places in the West Bank," Issa Amro says. "It's not normal life these days. Soldiers are everywhere, settlers are everywhere, people are afraid to leave their homes, they don't go to work, they don't go to school, they don't go to universities." After losing touch with Issa during the day because he was escaping from settlers who were chasing him in Hebron, we managed to reconnect over the phone and record a nine minute conversation about the hell working people in Palestine are going through right now and what their fellow workers in the US and Canada can do to stop the slaughter. - Dave Zirin: Don't let NFL, MLB 'sportswash' Israel's genocidal bombing of Gaza | Edge of Sports
- Date posted
- Description
- Recent broadcasts of NFL and MLB games have shown the complicity of major league sports in sanitizing Israel's war crimes and human rights violations. With the indifference toward Palestinian life being pumped throughout the media sphere and NFL owners generally being to the right of Jim Jordan, it is not surprising that they would fall in line and call for vengeance after the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attacks in Israel. The media, the right-wing hoards, and the liberal left have found common cause in wanting the people of Gaza to die in numbers that will prove to be a deterrent to future Hamas attacks, as if killing civilians won't just produce a more violent response. But this is what they want. Yet there are voices saying no. Jews are getting arrested in multiple cities throughout the United States calling for a ceasefire. In this "Choice Words" segment, Edge of Sports host Dave Zirin speaks out against the systematic "sportswashing" of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza.

- Description
- Happening Now: Anti-war activists in Baltimore are marching to demand an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas War. In the wake of the brutal Hamas-led attacks on October 7 that killed between 1,300-1,400 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, Israel’s far-right government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have waged a scorched-earth bombing campaign and ground invasion of Gaza. At least 8,796 people have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of Israel’s retaliatory offensive, Gaza's Health Ministry said today, including 3,648 children. Current polls show a majority of Americans support a ceasefire, even as the US government has continued to ramp up support for Israel and the Biden administration has compared demonstrators calling for a ceasefire and an end to Israel's occupation of Palestine to white supremacists who marched through the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. Journalist Jaisal Noor will be reporting live from today's Baltimore act...

- As Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza continues and thousands of civilians are killed or buried under rubble, a coalition of more than thirty Palestinian trade unions have issued an urgent call to labor organizations around the world to take action, including direct actions to halt arms deliveries to the Israeli military. While the vast majority of unions in the US are either staying silent or actively supporting Israel, fellow workers in Europe and the UK are heeding the call and taking direct action. Last week, for instance, over 100 members of the coalition Workers for a Free Palestine in the UK formed a human blockade in front of an arms factory in Kent owned by Instro Precision, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, one of Israel's largest weapons manufacturers. In this TRNN livestream, we’ll speak with a number of workers involved with that action about how and why they came to be active fighters in the movement to stop Israel's destruction of Gaza.

- Panama explodes in protests against Canadian copper mine
- Date posted

- Description
- Panama is on fire. Massive protests are rippling across the country. Road blocks. Unions on strike. School classes cancelled. Workers, teachers and indigenous groups are in the streets. They’re protesting the government’s approval of a renegotiated contract with a Canadian mining firm for the operation of Central America’s largest open-pit copper mine. They say it’s a threat to the environment and an attack on Panama’s sovereignty. Political analysts say the issue is having such an impact, because of the country’s long history of foreign intervention in the country, and particularly the U.S. control over the Panama Canal, which lasted throughout the 20th Century.

- The Trump movement is turning America fascist w/Jeff Sharlet | The Chris Hedges Report
- Date posted
- Description
- Jeff Sharlet has spent two decades covering the intersection of extreme Christian nationalism and the far-right. In his new book, Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War, he gives snapshots of a country rapidly devolving into a Christian fascism state. He captures the rage, the despair, the dislocation, the alienation, the aesthetic of violence, and the magical thinking that are the foundations of all fascist movements—forces that are now coalescing around the Trump-led Republican Party. The bizarre conspiracy theories and buffoonish quality of many who lead and embrace this movement, such as Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, make the use American fascists easy to ridicule and dismiss. But Sharlet implores us to take them seriously as an existential threat to what is left of our anemic democracy. Jeff Sharlet joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss his new book and the rising tide of Christofascism threatening our democracy.

- Robert and Julie Clark were just leaving a Goodwill when they were pulled over allegedly for failing to signal before 100 feet. Although this encounter could have been a simple warning, Dennison, TX, police inexplicably escalated the situation to a resisting arrest charge, damaging Robert's arm in the process and leaving him unable to work in construction for several days. The Clarks' ordeal demonstrates just how consequential a single arrest can be on a family's budget, as they were forced to deal with bail, loss of time from work, recovering the police report and body camera footage, and the legal costs to defend Robert from the serious charges. Taya Graham and Stephen Janis of the Police Accountability Report break down the impact of an arrest, the strange world of municipal courts, and whether the scales of justice are truly blind.

- Description
- The derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train in East Palestine , Ohio, on Feb. 3 of this year, and the subsequent “controlled release” and burnoff of toxic vinyl chloride, is one of the most catastrophic and devastating industrial accidents in our country’s history, and a catastrophe of equal or greater proportion could literally happen again tomorrow. Why? Because no serious steps have been taken on the industry or the government side to substantively address the issues that led to the derailment and its toxic fallout. Meanwhile, for the people still living in and around East Palestine, there is no going back to normal… life will go on, but it will never be the same, it will never again be what it was on Feb. 2. We cannot forget about East Palestine, and we cannot give up on the people there, who have been largely abandoned by their government, by Norfolk Southern, and by the media. - Description
- With thousands of Israeli and Palestinian civilians slaughtered in the past week alone, with the total blackout and bombing of civilians in Gaza happening this very moment, with Israeli government officials speaking in openly genocidal terms, and with US warships moving into the Mediterranean Sea, the permanent war between occupier and occupied has boiled over into a terrifying, new, and even more violent phase—and no one knows exactly what will happen next. In this urgent, unscheduled episode of The Marc Steiner Show—the first installment of an ongoing series of conversations we will have from Israel, the occupied territories, and Gaza as the situation develops—we take you to the heart of the war that's taking place in Palestine and Israel. - Why mass protests don’t work anymore w/Vincent Bevins
- Date posted
- Description
- The decade from 2010 to 2020 was one that saw more people around the world participating in mass protests than at any other point in human history. And yet, looking back, the results of so many of these mass protests, the societal changes that followed, were the opposite of what protestors were demanding. In his new book, If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution, award-winning journalist and foreign correspondent Vincent Bevins asks: Why? In this special episode, recorded at The Real News Network studio in Baltimore, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks to Bevins about his new book and about his own working life as a journalist covering people's uprisings around the world.

- Former Israeli soldier exposes IDF war crimes | The Marc Steiner Show
- Date posted
- Description
- There's a contradiction inherent in how Israel reckons with its atrocities against Palestinians. On one hand Israel's leaders and their supporters call for the genocide of Palestinians, such as this past weekend when Israel's Defense Minister announced a blockade of Gaza, referring to its residents as "human animals." On the other hand, the grisly truth of Israeli war crimes must stay out of sight, out of mind. Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli veterans, attempts to shatter the silence surrounding war crimes against Palestinians with soldier testimony. Nir Avishai Cohen of Breaking the Silence joins The Marc Steiner Show to talk about the work of his organization, the failure of the Israeli left, and his new book, Love Israel, Support Palestine: An Israeli Story.
Editor's Note: This interview was recorded in September, 2023, before “The Flood of Al-Aqsa" operation by Palestinian armed resistance forces took place on Oct. 7.

- Hunting down illegal Airbnbs with the first enforcement squad in North America
- Date posted
- Description
- Canada’s first dedicated squad of short-term rental inspectors — also known as Montreal’s new Airbnb police. In partnership with The Real News Network, Ricochet Media had the chance to join them as they hunted down illegal rentals with our camera crew in tow.
With fines that can reach $100,000 for repeat offenders, the highest yet in North America, Montreal is cracking down on illegal ghost hotels. The flurry of enforcement comes in the wake of a tragic March fire that killed seven, including six Airbnb guests in a building with inadequate windows, fire escapes, and smoke alarms.
“Our message to everybody who is doing illegal [short-term rentals],” Plateau-Mont-Royal mayor Luc Rabouin says when we meet him in a local park, “we are coming.”
This reporting is part of the Investigating Airbnb project, a crowdfunded, multi-outlet effort to track the impact of short-term rentals on the housing crisis in Canada.

- Why does America love football? The answer is imperialism | Edge of Sports
- Date posted
- Description
- The US is the only country on earth where the word "football" refers to a different sport from the rest of the world. Where did American football come from, and why is it that the sport is virtually only played in the US? To answer that, Dave Zirin takes us on a brief journey through history to the turn of the 20th century, when imperialists like President Theodore Roosevelt took up the cause of promoting football as a way to cultivate a "masterful nation."

It’s been eight months since a catastrophic Norfolk Southern train derailment turned life upside down for people living in and around East Palestine, Ohio. While East Palestine has faded from the headlines, though, residents are still in desperate need of help, which they say they are not getting from Norfolk Southern or from their government. What has been done in the last eight months to help the people of East Palestine and to hold Norfolk Southern accountable for this disaster? What is being done on the legislative side to address the conditions on the railroads that have run railroad workers into the ground and put communities like East Palestine at perpetual risk, all while ensuring record profits for the rail companies and their shareholders? How can railroad workers and East Palestine residents work together to make sure catastrophes like this never happen again? In this spec...

- What the hell happened in Spain's elections? | The Marc Steiner Show
- Date posted
- Description
- Spain's elections on July 23 yielded a surprise result that's left the country without a government for more than 10 weeks now. While the conservative Partido Popular (PP) won the most votes, no clear majority was established. The far-right party Vox also made significant gains, and has established ruling coalitions with PP at the local level. Yet nationally, left and center-left forces have managed to impede a conservative-led government from forming. Now, Pedro Sánchez of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party has been tapped by Spain's king to lead a new effort to form a coalition government. The left might just snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat—but it depends on whether they can rally nationalist Catalan and Basque parties to their side. Professor Bécquer Seguin of John Hopkins University and Professor Sebastiaan Faber of Oberlin College join The Marc Steiner Show to follow up on an explainer they wrote for The Nation about just what on earth is going on in Spain, and what ...

- Her father was granted parole. The governor took it away | Rattling the Bars
- Date posted

- Description
- Thomas "Tahaka" Gaither was out on parole when then-Gov. Glendening of Maryland revoked parole for all persons convicted of a life sentence. Since the late 1990s, Gaither has remained incarcerated—despite once having been deemed fit for release. His story is not unusual for those who've experienced Maryland's parole system. Since 2015, barely half of 523 parole-eligible prisoners serving life sentences have had their cases reviewed, and just 76 have been released. A new study from the Justice Policy Institute, Safe at Home: Improving Maryland’s Parole Release Decision-Making, identifies the problems with the system and attempts to map solutions. Tara Gaither, daughter of Thomas Gaither, and Shekhinah Braveheart of the Justice Policy Institute join Rattling the Bars to discuss Maryland's parole system.

- What JFK tried to do before his assassination w/Jeffrey Sachs | The Chris Hedges Report

- Description
- We will never know the world that could have been had President John F. Kennedy's assassination never taken place, but an inkling of how things could have been different can be found in the final months of his life. In his new book, To Move the World: JFK's Quest for Peace, Jeffrey Sachs unearths JFK's final political campaign—to establish a secure and lasting peace with the Soviet Union. How far did JFK's efforts go? What sort of progress was made on ending the Cold War, not through the collapse of the Soviet Union, but rather through mutual cooperation and understanding? To answer these questions and more, Jeffrey Sachs joins The Chris Hedges Report.
Jeffrey D. Sachs serves as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he holds the rank of University Professor, the university’s highest academic rank. Sachs was Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University from 2002 to 2016.

- Government shutdown: What happens to the NLRB?
- Date posted
- Description
- It is looking increasingly likely that Congressional Republicans will bring the federal government to a shutdown starting this weekend. "U.S. government services would be disrupted and hundreds of thousands of federal workers would be furloughed without pay if Congress fails to provide funding for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1," Reuters reports. "Workers deemed essential would remain on the job, but without pay." Among the many agencies that will be furloughing workers in the event of a shutdown is the National Labor Relations Board. Not only will unionized staff workers at the NLRB itself be hurt by the government shutdown—after years of enduring chronic and politically motivated underfunding and understaffing—but so, too, will working people around the country who depend on the NLRB to enforce labor law, investigate Unfair Labor Practice charges, manage union elections, etc. In this urgent mini-cast, we talk with Michael Bilik and Colton Puckett, legislative co-chairs of the Na...
