- The 2011 State Parks Youth Corps kicks-off this summer's season of work. Last year, over 1,000 youths around Missouri worked in the State Parks system maintaining, renovating and beginning projects that will touch our park system for years to come. Last year's Youth Corps program won national recognition for their efforts and this year the program will continue in that tradition of excellence which has just began.

- Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announced today that the agency's newest safety campaign---an anti-texting while driving message---will be taken "on the road". Stickers with the campaign logo will be affixed to all Patrol vehicles. The anti-texting while driving campaign is intended to encourage Missouri's motorists to put down their phones and prevent traffic crashes from the dangerous distraction of texting while driving.
"Inattention is a leading cause of traffic crashes," said Colonel Replogle. "If you're focused on sending a text message, then you aren't paying attention to your driving. Cell phone usage -- particularly texting while driving can lead to tragic consequences. These consequences are easily preventable if drivers would simply put down their phones and focus on the road."

- Gov. Jay Nixon, First Lady Georganne Nixon and State Parks Director Bill Bryan cut the ribbon to open an 11-mile portion of Missouri's Katy Trail State Park from St. Charles east to Machens. In opening the final section of the trail along the original Katy Railroad corridor, the ceremony at DuSable Park in St. Charles marked a major milestone for the nation's longest developed rail-trail project, which opened the first section of the trail in 1990. The entire trail now stretches 240 miles from Machens to Clinton, in west-central Missouri.

- In keeping with state tradition, Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon welcomed Missourians to the Governor's Mansion for candlelight tours on Dec. 3 and 4.
During the tours, visitors had the opportunity to view decorations in several rooms of the historic brick building, which has been the home of Missouri Governors since 1871. This year's decorations will feature a variety of traditional, old-fashioned and natural items, including greenery, poinsettias, fruits and nuts, glass ornaments and white lights.

These services are provided on the premise that with adequate preparation and reasonable accommodation, each blind or visually impaired person will be able to achieve his or her maximum potential in the home and community, in educational settings, and in employment.
In Fiscal Year 2009, RSB assisted 266 blind and severely visually impaired Missourians in reaching their employment goals.
Of the people leaving the program, more than 80% achieved a successful employment outcome.
