- Tucson Botanical Gardens 50th Anniversary
- Date posted
- Description
- In the heart of Tucson, where desert light meets the rhythm of rustling leaves, the Tucson Botanical Gardens blooms as a sanctuary of beauty, wisdom, and wonder. More than a garden, it is a living tapestry—woven from the dreams of Bernice Porter, whose vision gave rise to a place where nature, art, science, and culture intertwine. Here, petals whisper stories of heritage, and pathways invite discovery at every turn. It is a haven for the senses, a refuge for reflection, and a vibrant classroom without walls—welcoming all who seek to learn, connect, and be inspired. Guided by values of excellence, integrity, and stewardship, the Gardens stand not only as a testament to the desert’s quiet resilience but as a beating heart of community, where beauty is cultivated, knowledge is shared, and the spirit of place thrives. We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our oasis with this story.

- Estella González - "Everybody Dance" | University of Arizona Poetry Center Collaboration |
- Date posted
- Description
- Estella González’s poem ‘Everybody Dance’ is a fever dream of freedom—where disco isn't just music, but revolution in a sequin suit. It spins a glittering vision of a world where patriarchy crumbles under the weight of bass lines and ancestral healing, where daughters of diaspora dance unafraid through night streets, books in hand and beats in their ears.
It calls out predators, burns down shame, and sweeps the floor clean with groove and grit. In a time when violence, misogyny, and cultural erasure still haunt the headlines, this poem dares to imagine joy as justice, rhythm as resistance. It’s a hymn for healing, a prayer in platforms, a battle cry laced with glitter.
Now, more than ever, we need this kind of dreaming. Not the soft-focus kind, but the sharp, strutting kind—where survival is sacred and celebration is political. Where the past is honored, the future is fierce, and everyone is invited to the dance floor.

- Description
- Samirah Steinmeyer’s love of the natural world is deeply embedded in her ceramic pieces. Even her early ceramic works featured insects and plant designs on them as she started selling mugs, plates, and bowls on Etsy.
After dealing with burnout, healing from a serious bike accident, and facing supply shortages for ceramic ingredients caused by the pandemic, Steinmeyer amped up her experiments with local minerals and rocks, such as caliche and feldspar, and learned how to incorporate them into her ceramics. Her unique works visually and texturally mimic their real-life geological counterparts and the plant life that grows on them. The highly detailed pieces take time to create and Samirah explains the benefits that working slowly and intentionally has brought her.

In her current body of work, she asks a profound question: “What does the world look like from the vantage point of rocks?”
Her inquiry dives into themes of permanence and impermanence, transformation and return. She explores what it means to come home to oneself through the language of stone—through the slow, silent stories embedded in minerals and dust.
Why rocks? Why rock stories? Rani offers a simple truth: This is a rock planet. Nothing we know—no tree, no breath, no body—exists without the foundation of rock. The elements that formed mountains also formed us. The chemistry of the cosmos lives in our blood, our bones, our dreams. We carry ancient geologies in our cells. And when we d...
