- Five years and counting but still no decision from President Obama on the Keystone XL pipeline. Nebraska is one of the biggest roadblocks in TransCanada's way. Today in Grand Island, Nebraskans for Jobs and Energy Independence held a Pipeline Safety Seminar. They expressed their concerns over this delayed decision.
"It will be the safest pipeline in the United States.. possibly the safest one in the world."
That's according to Dr. Bert Fisher, a board certified hydro-- geologist and geochemist based out of Oklahoma. He was part of today's pipeline safety seminar held by Nebraskans for Jobs and Energy Independence. Opponents to the keystone XL pipeline are concerned that it would not only force land owners in the path to sell but threaten area ground and surface water. Concerns continue to grow over the proposed route that passes through the Ogallala aquifer.

- Nebraska's over-crowded prison system is one of the biggest concerns in the state. It's been discussed in the legislature and was a hot topic in last week's primary elections. Today, the Hall County board of supervisors met to discuss a new plan. One that could ease the burden on the state's prison system and benefit Hall county.
Too many prisoners and not enough space. That's become a common theme in Nebraska prisons.
"Capacity is at 160. We sleep approximately 480 people there. There's not enough beds, we have sled beds that we put out at night on the floor and the inmates sleep there and as you can guess it's very crowded."
In the last legislative session Nebraska lawmakers passed LB 907 to help address concerns of the overcrowded prison system. The bill would increase supervision after a prisoner is released, and is intended to reduce the rate of re-offenders.

Negative advertising has been talked about a lot over the last few months.
Voters in Buffalo County say it's been a factor this election season.
"I did a lot more research because you can't believe what you read. You hear something one day and the next day you hear something countering it. So I did a little bit more research this year than I have in the past," says Cirt Bjornsen, Kearney resident.
"I don't care for the negative. I wish they could take it off and leave it off and just talk about the good points and what they can do," says Pat Butterfield, Clerk and Kearney resident.
Residents say they're looking forward to the end of th...

- Description
- Three candidates are on the ballot for Grand Island mayor. We asked the candidates how they plan to balance the city's budget. Mayor Vavericek touted his previous experience and the fact that residents haven't seen a tax increase in the past 2 years. Haase says he wants to avoid raising taxes. But, Jensen believes it might be difficult to avoid a tax increase if Grand Island wants to continue to grow.
"We've balanced the city budget each and every time I've been mayor. I've presented 7 city budgets already. The last two were successfully balanced without a tax increase."
"I'm not gonna be raising taxes and layering on more expense for the citizens. I think the last 3 years our taxes have been up over 30%. All of our fees are up. Citizens just can't continue to absorb all these fees.
"Really at the end of the day we've got to look at what the revenues are that are coming in and figure out what the expenses are and if there's not enough we need to h...

Supervisor David Ziola, Steve Schuppan, Scott Arnold, and Hall County Board Chair Bob McFarland are all up for re-election.
The District 5 race has an interesting side bar. Back in 2011, board member Bud Jeffries died. And, current board chairman Bob McFarland was appointed to fill his vacant seat.
Fast forward to three years later and McFarland's challenger for this election? Bud's daughter, Jane Jeffries. Hall County Supervisor Pam Lancaster says these races could have an impact on decisions down the road.
"With the complex issues that were dealing with in the county the things about the courthouse and so on there's lots of room here for potential change and interaction within the board of supervisors."

- The first court appearance today for the Hastings mother and her boyfriend facing charges of child abuse in connection to the case of the shooting death of a 4 year-old boy.
The boy's mother was crying in the courtroom today. 29 year-old Amanda Pecor and 30 year-old Matthew Edwards were arraigned in Adams County Court this afternoon.
They are each facing charges of Class Three Felony Child Abuse. Class Three is child negligence that resulted in death.
Amanda Pecor and Edwards tried to lower their bond, which is set at 250-thousand dollars each. They said they wanted it lowered so they could go back to work. But the judge denied their request.
The two were upset with the ruling. But, the bond was set high because they are considered a flight risk. In fact, officials say when they were arrested Friday in Hall County they had a large amount of cash on them and were possibly trying to flee.
They waved their right to an attorn...

Kelly how's it going so far?
Good morning Shelby.
Now we're only a little more than 3 hours into the voting process and I'm here with election commissioner Dale Baker.
Dale, I know it's pretty early on, but how has the turnout been so far?
How many people voted early and used the drop boxes?
In your opinion what are some of the big issues that are drawing people into the polls today?
Generally speaking, when are the polls busiest?
Are you expecting a higher turnout not only because of the very tight state wide races, but also because of the local races here in Hall County?
Thank you so much for your time D...
